MMTPT228 ~ DESTINATION STATION
MMTPT228 ~ DESTINATION STATION
This week our destination is DeKalb, Illinois. If you would like a destination for your card this week, how about sending it to Marlene? Marlene is the mother of fellow Teapotter Gabby (Gabalot). Marlene and Gabby are extremely close. Gabby would like to share her mother's story with the Teapotters in hopes that the collection of homemade cards/happy mail, will lift her mother's spirits during a very difficult time!
Marlene's health-battle started with cancer at age 24. She was given a 50-50 chance in the day when they operated and hoped they "got it all" cause that's all there was. She made it through but had a major set-back four weeks later with another major surgery. After many grueling months, she returned to her old-self once again--a super Mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend, and all around person. A few months later Marlene began having trouble with her back and neck and had to go to the chiropractor regularly. The pain and problems were ongoing and migraines then began. There were no treatments or medications for that at that time. Then sciatica followed that and she found herself confined to sit/lay on the couch. Her pain was so bad at this time, it brought her to tears and limited her mobility.
By age 40, she had gone through eight major surgeries and her body scars looked like a road map. Despite all that, she bounced back and had many "good" periods/times when she looked as "healthy as a horse" and no one who saw her knew any different. Her attitude was positive, upbeat and she was ready to deal with whatever came next.
In the last eight or so years, along with a couple of minor surgeries, she has had to have seven bypasses, two carotid surgeries, and a main valve replacement. Some of these surgeries had negative, permanent after-affects, which left her with more illness (i.e. COPD, choking reflex, chronic sciatica, chronic pain, osteo and rhuematoid arthritis.) In addition, she suddenly lost her dear son at age 42 and her best friend/little sister to cancer at age 49. Marlene's husband has had several bouts of skin cancer requiring surgery and treatment. and a heart attack with complications and hospitalization twice.
Marlene just had kidney surgery a few weeks ago and is scheduled for another surgery in January and another after that. After going through everything written here, she has finally gotten to a point that she is discouraged and "down." She hasn't given up totally but is having so many more "blue" days than not. She has always LOVED Christmas but she can't seem to find the spirit this season. She is important and vital to Gabby's family and is the glue that holds the family together. She needs some Teapotter encouragement and love and, if she can't find the spirit of Christmas this year, she needs us to bring it to her. So let' rally around Marlene and bring Christmas to her the only way the Teapotters can!
