We will turn up the heat when we have company, but not by much because if it gets too high DD takes off her shirt, and she's getting a bit old for that (almost 11).
I do occasionally wear socks when the temperature starts going down, though. Mostly not, but occasionally!
DH and I were both raised in homes where only the living room/dining room/kitchen area were heated, and both of our fathers were quite adamant about the thermostat settings. DH's family still don't have the heat on until evening; my dad "let" my mom have the furnace on during the day, but it was never very warm. Sometimes after school you'd find my brother and I at opposite ends of the furnace with our feet up to the only two heat grates in the house.
The kids have just gotten used to what we're used to, I guess.
