I make my German Grandma's Fruit Bread recipe at Christmas time. I still have the hand-written recipe she gave me with her little comments thrown in! Her's is a yeast bread with tons of dried fruits in it and she always added the black walnuts that my Grandpa cracked every winter to pass the time!
And Gail, I've two boxes of freshly gathered walnuts in my garage if you want to come crack 'em! Walnut trees are the only trees growing here in my Riesling valley among the grapes.
