I have those plates too but don't need a shim. I do spritz the paper with water to get a crisper impression though. I do this with all of the texture plates from all of the companies. The Fiskar set of plates also contains a raindrop and scale (as in fish scales) plate. I purchased mine about 2 years ago and used a half off coupon so it was a great deal!
