Default Su Basic Black NEW ink pad

I see that Basic Black is one of the colors that was reformulated by SU.

Is the new color still purple black or is it more of a true black?

Thanks all!

I don't know but I hope it doesn't turn purple! When I was a demo I was doing a class and when everyone used the black ink pads all of them stamped purple! I was so upset...I won't ever forget it! Naturally, I didn't sell any ink pads that night!

Right now my new one is stamping a crisp, clean black. Hopefully that holds up and it doesn't change to 'purple' over time. I only had one of the old ones do that, though. Hopefully, the newly formulated ink will stay true and crisp. I love it!

My black ink pad is instantly purple when stamping. It didn't turn purple over time. I stamp with a group of 15 ladies who all own the basic black and every one of our black ink pads stamped a purple black. We tested them one night and compared them to a different brand.

I may have to invest in the new ink pad and reinker!

My first demo (she dropped after 11 years, had little kids, etc.) told me point blank not to bother with the black pad in early 2009 when I was putting together my first SU order. So I've always used Black Stazon, DI Black Soot or my favorite; Colorbox Chalk Ink in Blackbird.

Black Soot won't work because I want something I can use with my watercolor wonder crayons and watercolor pencils. Black Soot is not waterproof.

Are the other two brands waterproof?

Even though I personally rarely watercolor, I know some of my watercoloring stampy friends have recommended the VersaFine pads when you're interested in waterproof ink, including black. Just another idea. ;)

From Tsukineko's website:
Quote:

Looking for an ink to give you extremely fine detail? An ink that you are able to watercolor or marker over and it won't bleed? Then look no further! This natural oil-based pigment ink dries instantly on matte cardstock. You won't believe it till you see it. Available in 10 colors, no inkers needed. Inkpad lasts 3-5 times longer than regular inks.

I'm not sure about Colorbox chalk and Stazon inks being waterproof since I haven't used mine for that technique. Anyone else know?

My Stazon pad doesn't say anything about it being waterproof. I always use my Archival Ink by Ranger for waterproof ink. It works great for watercoloring with pencils. HTH!

If you're going to be watercolouring, go with the Stazon Black (which you can also order from SU! ;)) over the SU! Basic Black. Basic Black isn't waterproof on a lot of papers, it's more "water-resistant".

I have two of the new basic black ink pads from SU. Both are stamping black. (Not purplish black as the recent ones did.)

The new pads also stamp crisper. You need to stamp lightly with stamps and you get great coverage. I replaced all of my old pads with new SU pads and love, love, love them.

Can the new SU black be used with Copics or other alcohol markers? I am looking for a good Memento black replacement. I want a nice deep black stamp pad to use with my alcohol markers.

I stamped SU's new basic black on their vanilla cardstock at my demo's. When I got home I took out my Copics and colored it and had no bleeding. Was pleasantly surprised.

Thank you! This makes me excited. I really hate my Memento Black pad, lol. I want a deep nice black when I stamp. It's just one of those silly peeves. I will have to buy the new SU black ink pad.

Question A SU Basic Black question

I had heard the new SU Basic Black needs drying time when used on the SU white or vanilla or it smears. Any truth to that rumor?

I really like the Memento for my acohol markers. The Versafine black works great for water-coloring and I had bought the StazOn when my SU pads turned purple. Maybe I have enough black pads anyway! ;)

:(
It's true.
Right now, there is a problem with the new Basic Black on Whisper White and Very Vanilla. SU! is working on a solution. Rumours abound ... it's the ink, it's the paper, it's both, it's an alien from outer space ...

Really, it sounds like you have what you need for now. Once the basic Black issue is fixed, I'm *sure* you'll want to add it to your toolkit.

I'm not happy with the new SU Basic Black pad at all - and not just because of the smearing thing. I find that when it's dry is more of a very dark gray. And the new Basic Gray is much lighter than the old one. I made a card recently where I used the new Basic Gray ink pad then colored an image directly with the old marker and the colors are not even close to being the same. I'm really disappointed about this.

Wow, and I have the SU! new basic black pad on my wish list. I guess I'll wait until I hear that SU! has corrected the problem with the ink!

I am not gong to purchase the new BB, & I have also told my customers not to buy it, not until the problem is fixed. I also read that it does smear on other colors of card stock also. So glad I have enough of the old BB for workshops.

Same here.... I can't believe they are still selling it and haven't put it on hold until they get the issue figured out.

My demo says they have and I hope she has one at her next workshop (her old black pads were in awful shape). But I don't plan to get one, I still get way better results with Colorbox Chalk Ink in Blackbird and I love that it works so well for embossing.

Staz-on is a solvent ink, so yes it will be waterproof. Versafine is also another good choice, Onyx Black. I have a few(!) black inkpads, and have to say that none of them beat the Versafine pad for a nice deep black. I tried out a whole batch in a trial on my blog, both on a line image and a solid image. Link here if you want to see how each performed. Main reason for the trial was a new inkpad, Clearly Better, which was supposed to be specially formulated to work on clear stamps. Then it seemed to get discontinued, although I'm not sure if that was just the retailer, or the actual product. I actually didn't find it to work any better than Versafine.

Although I love the new pads, when I opened the black one, it was very dry and the images stamped a light grey. I gave it to my demo to return for me.
