Currently my stamp pads (LOTS of 'em!) are in wooden cassette organizers and no longer available Home Depot organizers. They are taking up so much vertical space that an entire bookcase is devoted to them. Since I got Copics, I just don't seem to use the variety of pads that I used to. What I am considering is the complete opposite of most people's plan: I want to take the brands least used and return them to drawers or photo boxes (plus add the re-inkers in next to them). I would gain back shelf space for things like pencil lazy-Susans.
I use a color swatch book when choosing a pad; so they would not be totally forgotten. Having the re-inker with them would save time. I guess I just wonder if this is a bad idea, and I will regret the move. Got any drawer organizers that would help prevent the pads from slip sliding all over the place and covers coming off? If you have them in drawers or boxes, are you happy enough with the storage system?
I have all of my ink pads in photo boxes and LOVE them that way! I have my photo boxes labeled with what color family is inside (neutrals, blues, greens, etc.) that way I know which box to go into.
Inside each box, I have my pads stacked up according to brand/type of ink (hybrid, copic-friendly). I've never done a count of how many pads I have but I'd say it's over 100. I have the entire Palette collection, almost all of the CSS collection, & some memento/PTI/assorted inks.
It definitely saves space having them this way. Some people don't like having their supplies in boxes, but I love having things organized and saving space. You have to do what's best for you!
I have my most-used inks in drawers that are directly behind my stamping area, and they are easy to pull out if I want to put them on my desk. The ones I don't use very often are in boxes.
I don't have a ton of space to keep them out in an organizer, but I find that the drawers work well for me. I keep my reinkers separate - if I want to use them for techniques or watercolors, I can pull out the box. I don't find myself having to reink pads too often.
And the covers have never come off the ones in drawers. I do have some that are stacked 3-deep, so I may try to free up another drawer so I don't have so many stacks!
I have all my SU inks in a ink pad holder with their reinker next to them. I got it years ago and it works great. I have an addiction to the Distress inks, so I put them all in a drawer in neat rows so I can see them all and they are right behind where I sit. The reinkers are are all on a lazy susan on a book case. The misc. pads I don't use often are in a box labeled. My archival black, memento black, versafine black are all on the side of my desk as I use them all the time. I think your storage will depend on your style of stamping. Are you a visual person and need to see it to use it? Are you a "digger" and love to look as you create? If it is out of sight will it be out of mind?
