Default What is the trend at the moment?

I have had a few months where I have not had access to my craft room and in that short time I find that I don't have my finger on the pulse any more! I love a clean and simple style but am just wondering what direction to go now - any ideas?

Looking forward to hearing your suggestions!

Thanks, Jill x

CHA is in two weeks. The sneak peeks coming out I keep seeing a lot of Victorian and Country Fifties kitsch. Both are so pretty. Chevron is popular right now and diesel punk which is a mix of steam punk meets the diesel age.

Chevrons and, for some reason, pennants and hot air balloons are still everywhere. Lots of updated owls, too. I'm anxious to see what motif and color combos the stores and crafting companies and focusing on for Christmas 2012.

Neon. And cross-stitch. Perhaps not together, though I might give it a whirl

I think you should go in the direction that makes you happy. Trends come and go, but you will know what you like when you see it. In fact, you probably know what you like already. Welcome back to stamping, and have fun!

Not an end result trend but the framelits from SU are a big trend! PTI had dies to match their stamps which I thought was a great idea. FINALLY Stampin' up is in on the trend and I am THRILLED!!!! The holiday mini has four bundles with them in it (stamp and framelits).....they are awesome!!! As someone that hates to fussy cut.....I AM IN LOVE!!! (I preordered......all of them!!!! ;) They make it so easy to create!!! and for me to be more creative!!!!

As for color I think SU's Summer Starfruit is going to be in. . . (It isn't yet though, so no need to tell me how little you like it- I don't really like it either !!!)

Another trend...mason jars (or Ball canning jars). I've seen them from: Papertrey Ink, Dear Lizzie, Cosmo Cricket, Crate Paper, and now Stampin Up. Definitely the trend du jour!

current trend in my world is not to do any crafting! lol! or rather then 'Ah &^%$ its so and so's birthday and I need to make a card in an hour'

Trends come and go, style remains constant! I tend not to go after a trend per se, I might gain some inspiration from it and adapt my style to bring it in, but realistically do the people I give my cards to know what is on trend in the crafting world..that would be a big fat no lol!

Te he he!! Just laughing to myself about the last comment - it sounds so like me! But strangely enough I still like to keep my finger on the pulse about what is 'in style' and, just like you, I tend to take little bits of inspiration from what is in trend and adapt it also. I got a parcel from the postman this morning - Lovely Layers from PTI! I did get a little time in the craft room today but the light isn't good enough now to take a pic - I will try tomorrow. Thanks again!

Your post made me laugh. I loved it. Add me to the "I enjoy looking at the trends but don't really follow them" LOL. Right now I am reading Stamper's Sampler from April/May 1999, lol. It's a really good issue. My Mom found it at the thrift store for me about a year back and I take a lot of inspiration from it. Boy, there was a lot of decorative scissors going on back then, lol. Now, the trend is Nesties. Trends are fun except the mustache one. That one scares me.

It was the technique challenge technique this week so you probably saw a TON of them here this week! The challenges seem to follow trends though so that might be a way to check out the latest techniques that are hot. Here's the master list of the challenge threads with links although it hasn't been updated since March. You can always just go to the main challenge thread and look through one by one.

Oh yeah, I forgot about the sun and sunburst trend! The paper technique is very cool, but there are also a ton of companies that have sun/sunburst stamps as well...PTI, WPlus9, amuse, and more.

Steampunk is also very hot, although many people make the mistake that anything Victorian is Steampunk. Not so:

Steampunk is a genre which originated during the 1980s and early 1990s and incorporates elements of science fiction, fantasy, alternate history, horror, and speculative fiction. It involves a setting where steam power is widely used—whether in an alternate history such as Victorian era Britain or "Wild West"-era United States, or in a post-apocalyptic time —that incorporates elements of either science fiction or fantasy. (From Wikipedia)

I like some of it, but like most trends, I'm getting sick of seeing it all over the place.

I think the biggest "trend" right now is papercrafting objects that then serve a purpose- like labels on mason jars, or note pads and stationery sets, jewelry, luggage tags, etc. I"m very excited by the new ideas and direction that paper crafts are going- way out beyond scrapbooks and cards. Paper craft is being used to design photo frames, household decor, gift boxes, coasters, hair barrettes, tote bags and wallets. It's very cool.

Mostly subbing but I have seen an increase in Peacock, and peacock feathers and different geometric shapes as backgrounds and borders.

I bought some Washi tape, and have yet to use it. It looks very cute, sitting there all wrapped up in its pretty colors and designs, sigh.....

I've looked at ways to use it, and I'm just not the sort to "tear" stuff and leave ragged edges. Didn't like that look with cardstock either.

So if I have to measure it and cut carefully, and then apply it, I might just as well cut a strip of patterned cardstock and stick it down.

I'm with you about washi tape. Not sure what all the hoopla is about it.
Bling is still big and doesn't seem to be going away. The chevrons is pretty
cool. I really love the dies and am so glad to see that stamp companies are
making matching ones. Hope that is one trend that doesn't go away any time
soon.

I heard Feathers were "In" this year. I am pretty excited about that. I love feathers.

I love Washi & Deco tape. I buy the Kawaii versions. I do not like ragged edges so I have to cut it all nice & neat too. Who wants Kawaii all ragged? I make my own Washi tape if I want cute designs that are not Kawaii. I have this feeling if I bought lots of Washi tape I will be stuck with it five years from now. Kawaii tape I don't mind since I am Kawaii collector and it's timeless. Steampunk Washi tape five years from now I would regret.

I think you should just go with whatever appeals to you. I try to buy things that will be used a lot, and not just some silly fad because everyone else is doing it. Pay attention to what type of cards you make the most of, and see if that stamp will be appropriate. Florals and scenic stamps are always in style and can be used for wedding cards, sympathy, birthday, Father's day and just about evrything in between. A good set of sentiments is a must too. Happy stamping!

I hate the words trend or trendy because to me it implies that it will have a very short shelf life (all I can think is that Grandma must've thought that orange shag carpeting was trendy when she had it installed!). So I'm one of the ones who says jump on the trend train if it's something you love, skip it if you don't, and just use what you want whether it's trendy or not! I skipped the pennant parade, avoided mouthless children (although sometimes think if would be nice if my DD did NOT have a mouth, but that's another thread), jumped on chevrons and hexagons, you'll have to pry my butterflies out of my cold, dead hands, and love all things Wizard of Oz - if someone doesn't think my card is trendy enough they can toss it in the trash. :-) But they'll still know I cared enough to make and send them a card!

What is wrong with Orange Shag carpet? ROFL!

I guess what boggles my mind about crafting trends is that I use to be a little Fashionista. I was all about trends in Fashion. I still enjoy trends in Fashion. Vogue is my bible. I spend the money on French, German & Russian Vogue too. This is why I don't have a big stamp collection, lol.

I can see why trends are so big in the crafting industry. The big difference between the crafting industry and the fashion industry is that the trends in the crafting industry every single company jumps on and shoves it in your face. High Fashion industry tends to go for more unique. I am not saying there is not shoving in your face of trends in the fashion industry but it's more the knock off market. Crafting industry everyone is doing Chevron. Everyone is doing it the same style. By the time the "Season" is over a lot of us are just over it.

I guess it's the same concept of hearing a great song on the radio the first time and it becomes a hit then you hear it every single hour. Ten years later that song comes on and you still turn the radio, lol.

I have always wondered if the crafting industry if the companies jump on the trends because if they do unique the company will get pushed in back and not noticed as much?

Subbing. I stamp all the time, check out SCS, read magazines and could not identify any trends that I saw and only recognized pennants as something I'd seen lots of. What's wrong with my perception?
