Red face DIGI-SCRAP PROGRESSIVE CHALLENGE #2 (JULY 2012) - TASK #1

Hello Digiscrappers!

If you're here, I'm figuring you're looking for the start of a brand new challenge for July. If you're already familiar with the rules, then skip on down to Task 1 below!

What is a Digiscrap Progressive Challenge?

-The object of the challenge is to complete one page over the course of four weeks by following instructions given in tasks posted each week.
-On the first Tuesday of each month, Task 1 will be posted, consisting of instructions for starting a scrapbook page that will then be built upon through additional instructions each week for a total of 4 weeks (Tasks 1-4.)
-The idea is to work along with the challenge as the tasks are being announced weekly, each task to be completed & posted prior to starting on the next task. (Once you post a weeks results, youre finished. Dont change your work for that weeks task.)
-At the end of the fourth week, you should have a completed page!
-Its fine to start late or catch up if you miss a week(s). Just be sure to complete & post each task before you look at or start the next one. Its more fun that way!

For additional tips and info. about the Digiscrap Progressive Challenges please go here.

Instructions will be given for a 12x12 page, but youre welcome use whatever size page you choose.
--------------------------------------

CHALLENGE TWO (July 2012) - TASK 1.

1. Open a new 12x12 document, name it and save it so you dont lose anything. Be sure to save your work OFTEN! (If youre new to Photoshop Elements (PSE) & dont know how to create a new blank 12x12 scrapbook page, go here for tutorial.)

2. REDUCED OPACITY PHOTO BACKGROUND. Select 1 or more photographs (as many as you want--you'll use one now and the rest later in another Task.) Use one of the photographs as background paper.
-Resize the photo to fit the full size of the page or most of the page; either way, it should be used as the main background.
-Reduce the opacity by at least 10%. You'll probably want to reduce it down to 70% or 80% opacity or so.
-You may use more than one paper underneath if you wish, but your top paper at this point should be the enlarged photograph.

-You may want to look at my sample to get an idea as to what I'm looking for. I've also attached a copy of the original photo I started with.

3. Add one or more paper layers on top of the photo layer to change the look of the background. Reduce the opacity to suit. For example, use a combination of edge overlays, gradient colors, papers that are torn, tattered or crumpled, with writing on them or any other things to add effects to the photo background. Experiment with different effects until you find the mix you like.

Thats all well add for today!

Heres My Task 1 page

-Save your page as a .jpg & upload to the Digiscrap Challenge Gallery-Progressive Scrap for July 2012 (This will occur automatically when you add the keyword: DGSCPR002Task1).

-Please also post your Task 1 page in this thread. Be sure to keep the original, unflattened page (layers intact). Youll need to add Task 2 to it for the next step.

"TASK ONE GALLERY"

Please note: When uploading your page to your gallery, on the Gallery Image Upload Page, choose the category Scrapbooking/ Digital Scrapping rather than Scrapbooking/Progressive Pages, since that Progressive Pages refers to a method of scrapping different from our progressive challenge.

Have fun! Dont forget to leave some praise for your fellow challenge takers!

This is probably not at all what it is supposed to be.
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
I selected a photo, opacity to 40 %. Put a paper behind it, reduced also.
Then for step 2 I overlaid another photo of branches, opacity to 40%. (I just couldn't see them at 30%)
Then for added effect I found a sepia option and it started going with this jagged edge and I thought it looked interesting.
About "overlays", this is a product to buy right? What is the "Stroke added to photo edge" - do I have that in PSE10?

Actually, I was referring to photographs when I said photos. We want to use one of your photos as the background. If you look at my sample, it should give you an idea of what I was looking for. You're on the right track with the layering effects.

Yes, stroke is a feature in Photoshop Elements 10, It's in the Effects panel, normally found on the right side of the screen. It's in with the Drop Shadow, Bevel, etc. I've attached a screen shot to give you an idea of where to find it.

Overlays are basically just a page that is transparent other than where the design or effects are. In traditional scrapping, think of a transparency with stamping and inking placed on top of a paper.

Here are a few examples of overlays from a freebie site I like:
MS Flower overlay 4 - Freebie overlay - DigiScrapDepot.com

Grunge-n-up-Overlays - a sample - Freebie overlay - DigiScrapDepot.com

CU Overlay February 2011 by Redju - Freebie overlay - DigiScrapDepot.com

The above samples are all from a freebie site called DigiScrapDepot. There are many free overlays at various freebie sites, as well as at most digiscrap online shops. You can make them yourself as well!

Hope this helps!

I have two photos of mine as the background - the fence and the branches - since I didn't have any other "overlays". I guess i did the sepia bleach out thinking it was an effect to try. Would it be ok if I tried again?
Thanks for the info and links!

You're welcome for the info and links, Joyce Ann. You're more than welcome to do it again. I'm sorry--I didn't realize those were photos--the photos threw me--they looked like digital papers! lol

Your sepia bleach out is fine--alterations of any kind to change the look of the photo are OK! I'm so glad you've hopped right on this challenge!

Here is another try
Digi Challenge2 Task 1 - 2nd try by AnniePanda - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers
I just used one photo (my fence) and added the overlay from Miriam thanks to Wendy. You can see the paper behind the fence photo as a bit of texture.

Wow Loved the idea of using a Photo for the Background paper but hard to do an overlay. I actually went and downloaded my first freebie all by myself and actually got it to work. Hard to tell but it's a woodgrain over a photo of Aspen trees. Here's the link to mine.

I'm not sure if I'm done with mine all the way, it's tempting to just keep adding layers and effects! here's mine, for now anyway!

Everyone has such different ideas. Fun!

You can always add a photo of a person for your background. I did one with my DGD as the background last week. It's here if anyone wants another idea.

Hmmm...It's also mostly blue, I guess that's my color for the summer!

I am so RUSTY, I'm having trouble remembering how I used to come up with those pages, Wendy:? I've been playing around with a background picture but am having trouble getting my crumbled paper to show.

Have you tried using it over the photo and maybe reducing the opacity on that crumbled paper?

Well here's mine I think I did it correctly. Even though I couldn't get the crumpled paper to work I really like how it turned out. Thanks for the challenge Wendy.

Nice start to the challenge!! Here is mine:

July Progressive Challenge Task #1 by Yapha - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers

I used my daughter's class picture with the Starburst from Stampin' Up's Decorative Overlays.

(The tape at the bottom is covering up all of the kids' names, which I don't want to post online. I plan on covering it with other items when the page is complete.)

Here's my start....it's way too hot today to be outside for long. When we came in from Water Country at lunch, it was 102! And that was without the humidity factored in..that was supposed to make it closer to 110! So I opted to scrap for a bit. Now I've got to go out for a while to play a round of mini golf to get some of the jitters out of DGS! Hopefully I'll be able to get back in before melting too much

ok, Yapha, it's all your fault!
You've convinced me to try this!
I used MDS. My overlay is actually a 12x12 stamp from the Number One kit ... and I think I may have 'cheated' by moving it down to only cover 1/2 the page, but I didn't like the mesh on top.
The woodgrain is Well Worn background paper as the bottom layer, so it shows through the photo, which is at 60%.
It took a lot of playing because I loved the picture so much I didn't want an overlay that took away from it.

The opacity part was easy ... getting the overlay right ... not so much!
