Hi! I have a Big Shot and I have been very successful with everything I've done with it -- BUT, I just bought two of the new Sizzix Flip It dies and instead of scoring the lines so that it creates a flip it, it CUTS and I don't have a card. I've made sure to watch videos to see if I was doing something wrong, but I'm not. However, for the first time, the sandwich is very tight, whereas it isn't too tight with anything else. Has anyone else had this problem or know a solution? Thanks so much for your help!
Well....I found my own solution, so I thought I would post it here in case anyone else has the same problem. I got out my crease pad (which I seldom use) and instead of making my sandwich with two acrylic plates, I used an acrylic plate on the bottom, my die, my cardstock, and my crease plate on top - works fine. I also tried out including one of the plastic shims and then both plastic shims -- it was too much and cut the score lines just like using 2 acrylic plates. So, just replacing the top acrylic plate with a crease pad and not using any shims made a perfect card.
, I was just going to suggest that. I don't yet have any dies with cutting and scoring, but I've been doing my research and know that I'll need a crease pad when I do. I'm glad you worked it out for yourself - that's extra satisfying.
I purchased mine at Hobby Lobby. They only had the square and fancy frame at the three Hobby Lobby stores I checked. I haven't seen the circle one or any of the others.
Thank you for your post - it's nice to have it verified that I'm on the right track. I love working with my machine and am so pleased with it. This is the very first time I've ever had a single problem of any kind and I was a little stumped!

wonderful help! thanks because I cut through a couple cards, too. I watched the video and that shows the two acrylic plates, but that cut through. The explanation of what is needed when you purchase the dies is the crease pad, but no where did it show to use it. Thanks to you...I have the answer!
I just bought my first flip it die from hobby lobby yesterday and i felt like i could have written that first post! i just emailed my concerns to sizzix. i will be angry if they say that i need a crease pad, though, because i would not have bought this die if i knew that i also needed an additional item in order to use it! Thanks, though, for the tips from everyone. Love this board!
It must vary with machine. I just cut 10 of the square flip it with my Big Shot and used the clear acrylic plates on the top and bottom of the sandwich. I didn't need a shim. It cut and creased perfectly. This was cardstock from Hobby Lobby, I haven't tried it with heavier cardstock.

I watched a YouTube video with Stephanie Barnard introducing the flip-it dies and she clearly showed the sandwich as clear plate, die, cardstock, clear plate--nothing about a crease pad. And she referrred to the clear plates as "bread". So glad I read this thread. Off to look at the Tim Holtz die now to see his version.
I just watched the video linked above it clearly shows and states to use a crease pad on the top, not a cutting plate. So we have two YouTube videos by two trusted women, Stephanie & Stacy, showing two different sandwiches. When I get a Flip-it die, I will have to see which works better on my Big Shot--crease pad or cutting plate. Another reason to read SCS--we are always learning here.
thanks to those that have replied. it is not "clear" that you need a crease pad, as the packaging on MY sizzix die did not say that one was required- nor did the instructions included inside.
Hi, I purchased the dies from Hobby Lobby also. I thought that I was going to tell you, no problems and I use the cutting plate , but i purchased the square die a day or two after the Fancy frame and upon reading your post, I decided to test it and it actually cut thru, so I tried the crease pad...had to run it thru twice, but on the second run it cut the card. So it could be a die problem since one cut plate and the other cut crease pad or perhaps a crease pad should be used all of the time especially since scoring is involved.
Hi everyone. I notice on the videos that they use the extended cutting plates and/or crease pad. I only have the regular size plates that are the same size as the dies. What does everyone here use? I think I'm gonna have to invest in the longer plates. Thanks, Angel
I just re-watched one of the videos and see that she did use a regular size plate on the bottom and an extended crease pad on the top.

The Flip It dies are BigzL, so the regular plates & crease pad will fit. (Not sure why they're usually shown being used with the extended accessories.)

I did break down and buy a crease pad, and now it works just fine. I am disappointed, though, in my interaction with Sizzix. They responded to my first email, but then when I asked if I needed a crease pad, they did not bother to contact me again. Very infuriating.
Hello! I had the same problem with one of the Flip-Its. Exchanged it for another (at Hobby Lobby) and the second die worked fine. I've been making lots of these cards as they are fast and easy! I used to cut the flip-it square design by hand, but often I was off just enough for the card to not look right. Love all the new designs!
I also just bought the flip it die today at HL with my 40% off coupon. I came home, was so excited try it and sure enough, it cut completely through the cardstock instead of scoring it. Now I need a crease pad. I'm not sure my HL had that but i can check again tomorrow. I also want the round die too. I got the square die. Love it if it works right!!!
I now have the round and the square Flip-Its. Usually, I can use a cutting plate with a crease die and not have a problem with creases cutting through, but these Flip-Its definitely need a crease pad.

I think most of the big box stores have their inventory dictated by their corporate headquarters. Locally in Chattanooga, TN, only the HL has the dies, and only one or two styles at a time (of the six available). I even asked the staff for rain checks and only got one die this way. Our Michael's store does not change scrapbooking inventory very much and rarely has anything new until two years after the product has already been available. Our Joann's has a somewhat static inventory, too. I do not expect to see flip-its there either any time soon. We used to have A.C. Moore, but they only stayed one year. I shop these stores every week so I can use the 40% off coupons which have been plentiful since Christmas. I've been surprised that HL has had a coupon EVERY week.
You should be able to find the dies online, but you'll probably have to pay full price.
For an upcoming kids' summer camp, we're going to use the dies to make cards for whatever foundation the leaders select. Kids like to play with mechanical things, so the hard part will be to get them to finish the cards!

After looking at these online it appears that they only make square cards!! How disappointing! Such cards require extra postage and you can only get one out of an 8.5x11 piece of card stock. Wish they had a rectangle one that made a standard A2 card. Does anyone else feel this way? I may email Sizzix about this.
There are six styles of flip-its: circle, square, flower, wavy label which I think they call fancy frame, diamond, and one more I can't think of. Yes, I had the same problem trying to cut the square flip-it myself. I was always a little off on my measurements. At our local HL, I've purchased each of the flip-its either on sale or with a 40% off coupon. Also I hadn't realized that the finished size is 5" x 5", so they don't fit into an A2 envelope. Had to buy a box of 5&1/2" x 5&1/2" envelopes from a local supplier. I still like the flip-its because it can make a simple, flat card which takes regular postage.

Really? I thought square cards required extra postage. That certainly makes the die more attractive to me. I also would have to track down some square envelopes - or make them with my Simply Scored Diagonal Plate!
I think you may be right about extra postage. Recently at the P.O. I usually go to, what used to cost $1.22 now weighed out at $1.95. What??? Going to another Post Office station to get the same card in a bubble envelope re-weighed to see what comes up. Can't afford $1.95 postage per card, it's just too much.
I have done some research and square cards cost 20 cents more than whatever they would cost otherwise because they have to be hand-sorted. If Sizzix would just make a die for a rectangle Flip It card then it could produce an A2 card. Don't know why they didn't think of that!
Yes, you are correct, 20 cents extra. My receipt showed a 5.5" x 5.5" envelope as non-machinable. Today I took two 6" x 9" bubble envelopes (local destinations) to get postage on the. On purpose, I went to a different Post Office station. The lady charged me only 90 cents for each. On previous visits to my regular P.O. station, the most recent price was $1.95 for the same size and weight. It used to cost $1.22. Then it jumps to $1.95?
Sure would be nice if Sizzix would design the flip-it to be just a tad smaller so it could fit into an A2 envelope.

You can cut two cards from one piece of 8 1/2" x 11 cardstock.
I do a lot of square cards so I didn't even think about extra postage. They would be fun in an A2 card also though.

You can avoid extra postage charges for square cards by using standard 5-1/4" x 7-1/4" rectangular envelopes instead of square envelopes. It's not as attractive as using a square envelope because of the extra space inside the envelope but it does save on postage.
