JUN12VSNJ- Saturday, June 16- 6 P. M. EST-- Map or Map/Globe Element
Title: Map or Globe Element
Hostess: Brenda K. (tessaduck)
Keyword: JUN12VSNJ
Day/Date: Saturday, June 16
Time: 6:00 P. M., EST
The basic purpose of any map
Is to tell you where youre at.
The maps also help you in knowing
Where youve been, where youre going,
And how to get there. And whats more
Theyll tell about what was there before.
As you learn about your home
You can use maps to roam
Places where you might not ever go,
To compare with what you already know.
The symbols on maps stand for things.
Colors, lines, pictures: Each brings
Ideas across in graphic form,
Like where its cold or where its warm
Or where its crowded or they vote Democratic.
But map-reading skills are not automatic!
Maps are full of all kinds of surprises.
Did you know that maps come in different sizes?
Thats called scale. Its large or small,
Depending on area covered. Its all
Very basic. And there are different kinds
Of maps: Physical, like mineral finds,
Weather maps and graphic relief;
And cultural, like religious beliefs,
Population density and voting patterns.
Whatever happens, that really matters,
Happens somewhere. Cartographers take
That information, record it on paper,
To share with the public, graphics intact.
What theyd seen is what theyve mapped.
Directions, scale, title and key:
What theyd mapped stands for what youd see.

SO-- I wrote this poem in another lifetime ages ago, before digital cartography, when I was a graduate student in geography. Eh. Im not a great poet, and never made a career in geography (taught lots, though), but Im still fascinated by maps. Must be a paper thing. Also, I like the idea of repurposing.
Lets make a project, using maps or images of maps and/or globes.
My first samples background is an old AAA road map of the western US.
I used a page from a discarded student atlas to make the lid on the second sample, a gift box for a graduate. (Yes, this box CAN be assembled in less than 45 minutes. Theres no adhesive and I used an ms score board!)
My buddy, Moe, used some wrapping paper.
Feel free to use a stamped image of a map, map elements (e. g., compass rose), or globe on your project. Cant wait to see what you all can do with a map!
1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 10:00 PM EST ON Monday June 17th.
2. You have 45 minutes to complete the challenge.
Please remember to put in the correct keyword, JUN12VSNJ, when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
It is also highly recommended that you post a link to your creation in this chat thread to be sure your creation is seen.

Hi, all! Periodically, I invite similarly obsessed stampers to my home for an afternoon of Paper Tricks. A few weeks ago, when I was in the planning stages for this challenge, I asked the tricksters to be guinea pigs and try the challenge. I set out scraps and stamps, and set them free. Amazing what they could do in about 20" each! Moe actually finished two cards. I put the first one in the thumbnails. Here's the second:

So NOT mundane! Your card knocks my socks off. I remember this stamp set, thinking I had to have it... One of the few times I showed restraint on the craft budget, and now I'm sorry.

Thankfully my girls have been working on supper, but I'm still behind! Hope to get one more made before we eat!
Oh, right. Dinner hour-- I keep forgetting about the time zones. It's almost 4 p. m. here...
AND THE SNAIL MAIL JUST CAME! Sorry. I'm shouting, because I'm expecting my last order from Sweet 'N' Sassy. Let's see how fast I can sprint to the mailbox!

Thank you! I will have to do this one later, as I can't find any map paper. Just spen a lot of time going thru my paper. I knew it was on the list and thought I had some! I think maybe I know where an old map is. But will be back later.

I understand. Stamps with maps or globes are okay, too. Did you see Trickster Moe's second card? It's a large stamp, old style world map. Her first card used wrapping paper. Carole used a souvenir tourist map and Lynn used a copier image.

Well, while eating supper I thought of something! I went out to my card and got my pocket size atlas out of glove box and made a copy of it on cardstock. So here is my card! Thank you for the challenge, Brenda! Now my DH will get a card from me tomorrow!
Sharon
We are watching golf, and I am fizziling out on these challenges. I remember the first few VSNS I did, I would do all the challenges just as fast as I could.
Now, just a few years older and I am just don't have the umpth anymore!
But I love VSN!
Hi Brenda, had to wait untill my challenge was sort of over before I could upload. Road maps always remind me of car trips so here is a card with a road map and a car mind you I wouldn't like to be paying for the petrol for this one ;)
Thanks for a great challenge.
Cheers

Love the card, Sharon. Sure to be a hit. Amazing, the ideas that occur to us at odd times.
I understand about energy-- Last spring, I couldn't wait to get the next challenge, and did a pretty good job of completing them on time. This time, as a newbie hostess, I find myself a little at loose ends. Since I'd already finished all the samples, I don't know what to do with myself!
Well, that problem's solved: I'm on my way to a local theater production: Glass Menagerie. The vsn challenges will have all been presented by the time I get home.

The blue classic coupe, again! Love the card. Our family's blue car when I was a kid was a used station wagon. Profoundly used. As I remember, there was so much rust on the undercarriage that we could see the pavement, looking down at our feet, in the back seat!
How funny.

Hi, all! Before I take off for the theater (cutting it close) I thought maybe you'd like another mappy card. Doesn't qualify for vsn, because it took too long to make it:

This is my first VSN ever! Thanks to tessaduck for encouraging me to participate! Here's my creation: Nautical Birthday
*chuckle* vsn is great fun. Have you checked out any of the other challenges? Your stamp set would work well with the Edmund Fitzgerald challenge. My other favorites were (but don't tell the other hostesses) the band Journey (A), mirror technique (I), 3 wise men (L), and final frontier (P). Also enjoyed the mini 4, ghosting, but that's expired.

Possibly my favourite challenge since I LOVE (and hoard) map paper. I managed to get a globe and map paper on my bookmark. Thanks for a great challenge Brenda! Go To Your Happy Place bookmark
