DGSC066 Three Groups of Three - 6/5/12
DGSC066 – Three Groups of Threes - 6/5/12
________________________________________
Welcome to our first Digi-Scrap Challenge in some time! We are VERY excited to make this a weekly challenge once again!
I am one of 4 Co-Host/Moderators for this forum:
Wendy - wendella247 Co-Host & Moderator
Terri - 3fries Co-Host & Moderator
Hannah - clarhan Co-Host & Moderator
Molly - cmkebennett - Co-Host & Moderator
A little about me! I am a married momma of three amazing children, now ages 15, 19 and 23. I’ve been a scrapbooker for probably 10 years, and dived into digital scrapbooking on my iMac computer as soon as Stampin Up’s My Digital Studio came out – has it been three years now?!! I currently Digi-Scrap almost entirely exclusively MDS, a choice I’ve made simply because I’m really too lazy to spend a lot of time searching for free and other elements. I love pushing myself to create and re-create fantastic layouts that I see all over the place, but most importantly, I just love getting my family’s memories captured in a scrapbook. I love to journal, and consider it the most important element on every page!
Now onto the First Challenge!!!
Groupings of threes are always very eye-catching. This week’s first digital challenge is simple, but hopefully will encourage you to try a few new things with your digital scrapbooking program!
On your page use the following THREE groups of THREE:
1. Three photos, all in the same shape and size, and color tone (Use the photo editing tool and choose to make your photos either another color, black and white or sepia). Practice using your copy and paste and edit object feature to get them exactly alike.
2. Use three digital stamp brushes on your page. Use your edit object feature again to resize at least one of the stamp brush images to better fit your page.
3. Use at least three embellishments somewhere on your page!
*Extra Challenge if you feel like pushing your creativity – play with shadows with each of the elements listed above
My Sample: DGSC066 – Three Groups of Threes - 6/5/12 by 3Fries - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers
If you have questions, you can post them here or PM me.
You can view all submissions for this challenge here: DGSC066 Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
To add your page to this gallery and the monthly scrapbook gallery just add DGSC066 and SBC12JUN when uploading. [Note to host--be sure to update these keywords based on challenge # and month/year]. Also, please take a minute to post a link to your sample page on this thread so we won’t miss seeing your work!
Have a great week! I look forward to seeing your layouts.

I'm so excited the digi challenges are back, Terri! Here's my page for your challenge. This was a lot of fun. I don't think to use digi brushes and stamps very often and I had to go over the "how to's," but I'm so glad I did. They create such a clean, crisp look. I also had to dig out some old instructions on recoloring photos, so I had two great mini-refresher courses!
Taming of the Do
Thanks for the challenge, Terri!

By the way, I wanted to mention to any of you who don't know about the Goals thread on SCS, you might want to check it out.
This is the thread for June:
June 2012 Scrap Pages & Scrap Chat - sbc12jun by Lmn at Splitcoaststampers
Each month a new thread is started. If you want, you can set a "goal," being the number of scrap projects you want to get done that month (or year). You can pick any number you're comfy with and there's no pressure--it's just to help us stay motivated. There are lots of other scrappers, both paper and digi there, and we keep each other inspired and encouraged. Great gals there!
What I like best is we always enter the keywords SBC12Jun (or SBC12Jul, & so on...) to include our pages in the monthly scrap gallery. This way, we can go to just one place to check out the newest pages of our buddies and conveniently leave 'em some love.

It should be the same. In PSE9 I save the original layered psd file, then use the "save for web" feature, setting the image size at 600x600 pixels, then lowering the "quality" down so it will make a 250-300 kb file for this site. Of course many digi sites have a lower kb requirement than that. Many require 150 or 250 kb or under.

I finally finished up the pages I was working on for the VSBN challenge #2 so now I can start on this one! Great challenge Terri.....I'll try to work on this tomorrow since it's pretty late and I've got to get up early to get DGS ready for his first day of summer camp.

I have been trying to figure out "stamp brushes". This must be an add-on that isn't already in Photoshop, right? Any ideas where I should look for help learning this? Don't have time right now, will pop in later.

joyce,
i do not know where the brushes are in photoshop, but photoshop elements comes a few dozen basic brushes. i learned photoshop elements thru scrapgirls.com. they sell a video series for photoshop, photoshop elements and one other program. i spent a week in tears trying to figure out pse, i thought i was pretty computer savvy, but this had me beat. i spent the $30 and there is probably 5 hours of step by step, anyone can follow instruction. you can run the tutorial and photoshop at the same time, pause the tutorial, do the task on photoshop, great screen shots. i cant say enough about these videos. they also sell brushes for most programs. another place whose stuff i like is digital scrapbook place. scrapgirls also offers digital supplies free everyday with the newsletter. good way to start a stash. between reg. and digital thought my husband is going broke!

Thanks for responding to me.
So, PSE already has brushes in the program? I want to find them b4 I spend money on more. I guess it is NOT under the "Brush" option because all I got there was how thick or what texture I wanted the brush to be.
I will look into this now that you have offered suggestions.
I appreciate your input!

brushes
do you use photoshop or pse? the ones pse comes with are not awesomely creative. there are tutorials out there on how to make a brush from a png file or alter and exsisting brush and do a save as.

Joyce Ann, after you click the brush, look at the top at the options bar (the gray bar at the top of the page.)- it is there you can search the brushes. Check out all the drop downs from the top bar. Each time you choose a tool, your settings are all at the top.
You can just choose a shape or choose a tiny round one and draw or doodle.
Hope this helps.

I'm lovin' the pages everyone has been doing! Such variety!
It's nice to see we have people at different experience levels too, so we can help each other.
I know Terri (3fries) uses MDS -- anyone else use that program?

That's good to know. I know there are quite a few digi-scrappers on SCS who use it, so it's nice to know if they join in, we'll have people who can give each other pointers.

Wow you folks are so forthcoming with wonderful info - can't wait to dig in and learn about brushes. (I have a program from Adobe called Photoshop Elements 10) I suppose I shouldn't have shorten it to just Photoshop, didn't realize there was a difference - still lots to learn.

It's usually referred to as Photoshop Elements 10 or PSE10. That differentiates from the next Adobe program which is PhotoShop (PS). One can do more with PhotoShop, but it's more for commercial users and designers. Elements does pretty much all the things a scrapper could EVER want!

photoshop vs pse
i've not found anything that i couldnt do with pse. in fact i have a friend who is a wedding photographer and she uses pse. my son has photoshop and besides a steeper learner curve is the way steeper price. even with student discount it was i think $600. i'll spend my extra $500 on more craft supplies, thank you very much!

I am all for spending more for crafting supplies. PSE took me a while...did the courses through Jessica sprague...love forever access because I go back often to look at the classes multiple times!

Congrats for giving digi a try, Pattie! You did a great job on your first page! Hang in there--although there's a learning curve, slow and easy does the trick. I started using Photoshop Elements in small doses by doing a challenge or two each week and went back to my comfort zone--paper pages--the rest of the time. As I got more familiar with the digital program, I felt much more comfortable with digi. There are always new things to learn, but once you know the basics, it way easier to make a page and more fun! And there are people here that know MDS and can help you along the way!!
I'm so glad you played today!

I found a bit of decorative brushes in my program. Not many there but I did it! I'm reading up (soon) on how to make brushes from photos I have. For now, I at least have this challenge done.
