Default Magnetic Sizzix Plate

Does anyone know if Sizzix sells a magnetic plate for the Big Shot Express (the electric pink & black one)? I need to keep my Spellbinders from sliding around when I run it through. Every time I run my dies through, they cut perfectly half the time, but the other half, they have somehow slid around when they've gone through :( I've looked around and I see one for The Wizard, but is there one for the Big Shot Express?

I don't know, but there was a discussion about a DIY magnetic plate not too long ago. I took of my cutting plates and adhered one of those self stick magnetic sheets to it and use that.
However, after doing this, I realized that the magnet was really quite useless. The die didn't move around, but the paper sure did, lol!
So now I just use a piece of low tack masking tape to hold my die and paper together.

Katarina, that's a great idea, but doesn't the tape rip or pull at your paper you are cutting? I have tried that and all I get is tape stuck to my dies (which leave them sticky & gummy) because of the pressure, and it rips my paper when I go to peel it off. Even if it doesn't touch the paper I'm cutting with my die, it still manages to mess up the whole operation :(

I like the magnetic sheet idea, but I would be worried about it getting too thick and stuck in my machine. Don't ask me how many times my machine has gotten stuck

I use removeable tape to keep the die to the paper nice and straight and no it doesn't ruin my paper Hope that helps.

Tynmicsmom, I have tried tape too, but the intense pressure of being under the diecutting plates always leaves them stuck to my paper and rips, them, distorts them or leaves it "pilled" or "fuzzy" from removing the tape and "ruffling" the paper fibers.

I am truly stumped on what to do, and I was hoping that Sizzix had a die plate for this problem. I guess they don't, yet. Maybe I will call their headquarters and ask them what I can do to fix this problem. They might have some ideas.

Since everyone keeps mentioning it, I'll look it up, right now....

There is a magnetic board. It's new. It's called the Genuis Magentic Cutting plate, I believe. It's made by Quik Kuts and it works in all the machines.

It's actually offered by Lifestyle Crafts, formerly Quickutz.
Here's a link to their spiel on their blog.

Ok so I looked up this plate and it's not getting great reviews at all. Many are saying that the magnet is weak and you might as well go without it, it was that weak :( And a few people said their dies still slid around with it.
I wasn't pinning my hopes & dreams on it, but I was getting excited about this thing
I just might look into getting a very thin magnetic shim and see what happens.

The entire board is not magnetic. There are a few magnets placed here and there on the underside of the mat. If you remember the gray cutting mats that came with the Epic, that's what the Genuis is, only in whatever new pretty color. The underside is sort of a honeycomb pattern and the magnets are in the honeycomb, so if your die isn't sitting on top of one of the magnets, it will slide around until it finds one. The other mats that come with it are made from that self-healing rubber, but you can't see through them. And the cost is $50.

I used the Lifestyle Crafts magnetic plate at a retreat and it worked great.

You can often find the Sizzix Magnetic Platform at Hobby Lobby for $34.99 (?) but you can use a coupon. It is the same as the one SU is selling for $39.99. The magnets are strong but is is not a solid magnet area. The magnets are spaced apart so you might have to move your paper and die around on the platform so you don't waste paper or want to fussy cut an image.

Love mine!

You might try magnetic vent covers from the hardware store. I got mine from the Ace chain but others have bought from Home Depot. I do have the SU magnetic platform for the Big Shot, but I'm not impressed..........some dies cling to the platform and others don't. Even the magnetic die-storage system sold by ellenhutson.com can't hold some dies tightly, and of course the bugaboo of the entire operation is the fact that the cutting plates and metal shims warp, and thus warp the dies, from the get-go, so the dies are not close enough to the magnets to be held where you put them.

If cutting plates, both top and bottom, stayed flat, I believe the magnetic platforms, no matter the brand, would work as expected. Given that the vendors selling the platforms also sell the machines, the dies and the cutting plates, wouldn't you think it would be to their advantage to insure that all the parts of the operation work together for good? Instead, the cutting plates for the Cuttlebug used to sell for $9.99 and now sell for $15.99 and they are thinner than they ever were before.

End of rant! Thank you for listening.

I'm waiting for our Hobby Lobby to open and getting the Sizzix one with a coupon. Our J's and M's still don't have it and they have restrictions on their coupons for Sizzix products anyway.
I have quite a list growing for Hobby Lobby-it's opening sometime this Spring.

I picked one up at Hobby Lobby in AZ for a friend while on vacation. Love that you can use their 40% off coupon on it.
