Have you checked out Simple Stories? They have great kits that have much of the design already built into the pages. And you can use all kinds of different page protectors, from We R Memory Keepers, to go with their products. I have found that using their products have made scrapbooking easier. I also spend a lot of time checking out magazines to get ideas.
