TLC373 ~ Magical Masking ~ {4/16/12}
No, it's not what you think.....it's Magical Masking Tape!
As some of you know, I am on a mission to use "old" supplies and "old" things and make them new! I am bringing sexy back! I got my eyelets out this week, and fibers, and did some polished stone...stamp sets I have had forever and haven't used.
So today we are doing an "old" technique -- one I learned years ago. I call it Magical Masking Tape!
It's simple and makes for a neat background. Here are the supplies you need:
1. Masking tape
2. Glossy paper (it won't work on regular cardstock - the paper will tear)
See below for alternatives!
3. Dye ink pads of your color choice
1. Take a piece of masking tape long enough to cover from edge to edge of the size paper you want to use.
2. Lay it across the pad, sticky side down, and press into the ink.
3. Now lay the tape across your glossy paper and press down.
4. Then we do the step that I call "Eyebrow Waxing."
Hold the paper and quickly pull the masking tape off (like those gals that wax eyebrows do with the tape after pressing it on -- OR like you may have pulled off a bandaid! OW!!). Be sure to hold the paper with one hand and the tape with the other.
5. Your ink will make a lovely textured design on the glossy paper.
6. Continue with different colors, using a different piece of tape for each color until you achieve the look you want. (I used a new piece for each application, even with the same color.)
I did mine in "rows", but you could layer colors on top of each other, or do all one color -- just depends on what you want it to look like. I did all my Rose Romance color, leaving space for my second color, and then did all the Pretty in Pink color.
See the thumbnail photo below for my last color I did -- masking tape is still in place. Your design will look different from others, depending on the colors you choose and the width of your tape. Mine was about 1 1/2".
I wish there was a way to do this if you don't have glossy paper -- if you have any ideas, post them!
Added: Sallie used regular cardstock and painter's tape and has a beautiful design in the gallery!! Thanks for the idea!
Ina suggested photo paper from the dollar store, and Neva said she took some of the "sticky" off of the tape first by sticking it to cloth. Thanks for the ideas! I want everyone to be able to try it.
My sample: Enough

Judy, I've never done this technique before. I'm so anxious to try it.
Well, here's my card. I love this technique. I'm going to have to play again later. Thanks Judy!

This may be an old technique, but I had never heard of it. it looks interesting and I will give it a try, if I can find my masking tape. For those of you without glossy paper......just go to the dollar store and buy a pack of photo paper for $1.00.

New to me too - and I blitzed the house last night on the cleaning front, so if I'm not too tired after work I should be good to try this out when I get home. Your photo looks like a lovely soft distressed look. Thanks, Judy.

A new technique for me, Judy. It does create a neat effect. I didn't do a whole background...just a stripe since I was combining your challenge with the CAS for today. This technique fit in perfectly with that CAS sketch IMO. I used regular CS and blue painter's masking tape and it worked fine. Thanks!

Wow! This is a nifty technique and I do want to try it, but it will probably be Weds. before I have time to make a card.
The cards in the gallery so far are looking great! This looks like a technique that I'll use often.

Fun technique, Judy! Here's mine. I did use masking tape on my regular white card stock, but I used Ranger Distress Inks, so I don't know if that made a difference or not.

TLC373 Bloom On!
What a terrific challenge! I made an aquamarine background for my ATC and went from there- with Prickly Pears' Flourished Circle Tag and Bloom On! Added a fabric border, and double ties. Enjoy the flowers! Here's Bloom On!

My goodness, but isn't this technique fun? I used blue painters' tape over plain white cs, with a negative mask, for this one:

What a great technique! I have seen such lovely samples in the gallery, but I need practice - even if I did another which for now I have left on my blog.
I will not have a chance to take a closer look at the rest of the gallery until later.

MAGIC MASKING ALTERNATIVE
Here's what I did ... I only had a roll of super old, super sticky, gooey masking tape in my misc. "tool stuff" bin. Drats, but now it's in the garbage! I did have a partial roll of painter's tape that I purchased for masking and thought I'd give it a go. I used Ranger distress ink on regular cardstock and it worked! There was no ripping because painter's tape is removable masking tape! Yeah! BTW, the ink didn't stay "wet" like it does on glossy paper.
So ... why is my card not in my gallery? Here's the story:
Made card, very excited to share my discovery. On way with card to computer to upload, I stopped in the kitchen. Set the card on the kitchen counter while I put dinner in microwave. My cousin arrives. I go in the b.r. Micro timer goes off. Cousin takes my dinner out of the micro and sets it on the counter. YES! Unknowingly, she sets it on top of my card. Dinner was "steamed" and the plate had condensation on the bottom ... a lot ... to the point of some dripping. Consequently card got wet and smudged and ugly. Cousin felt really bad. I told her it was okay. (She was trying to help me so what else could I say?!?) Needed to work on my TPT card for Charles so I haven't made another one as yet. When I do, I'll upload it and link it to this thread. End of story.
Okay then. Hope this is helpful to somebody.
HAPPY papercrafting! Gabby
