Hi everyone, I am hostessing the Christmas Card Challenge here on SCS and one of my motivational things is to be nosy and get thoughts moving. (I love being nosy!)
Well recently I asked the group what their Christmas Dinner menu was and it returned many cool responses!
One lady said she always wanted to put together a book of family recipes to give to her children.
I also have started a book for my kids. Recipes that belonged to my grama, and little helpful household hints I'd learned from her.
So whose with me in making a book to pass on?
You make it your way, you mail nothing to anyone..it belongs to you!
Any size, shape and style.
Cards, pages, tags...whatever
Scrap book, recipe box, digital, even a spiral notebook works!

A household hint from my Aunt Ruby (love her SO much!), and is probably well known, is this...when washing your windows, go one way (up and down) on one side, and the other way (side to side) on the other side so if/when you have streaks, you know which side they are on!
Very weird. I actually bought of these the other day. I picked up one for me to put all the scraps I have laying around. Then went back and got two more for the boys. Thought it would be good Christmas present for Mitch. Bug's can wait a little while longer...

Yes, Vikki Jo......I have a recipe book that I got just before we got married in 1970. I've still got the book, but not the marriage! It's called 'Happy Living, a guidebook for brides'. It deals with budgeting, setting up your household, buying furniture, decorating, how to keep house, and only the last 4 chapters have the recipes. It's a great reference and I haven't looked at it in years, but just brought it out. The table setting is in the second chapter....so cool. Thanks for reminding me. It's fun to look at it again, and I might even learn something!

Vickki I'm in.....I actually did this about 15 yrs ago when I first started scrapbooking for my step daughters, their Mother had passed away and I got some old pics of her and recipes from my SIL and made them each a book using also pics of them & their daughters. Also put some things from aunts & gramma in it. They loved them...... NOW need to make one for my own daughter She does not use cookbooks or recipes often but someday will enjoy looking at family recipes. Thx for the boost....
I have a Betty Crocker cook book from 1962 (a wedding gift) like yellowrose46 I still have the book but not the marriage......

I think that is so incredibly awesome that you did that for your step daughters!
Scared now... Clint and I got married in 2010, we got a cookbook too. I'd better get rid of it to keep the marriage! ROTFLMAO!
it is one of those churches do for fund raisers. no tips, no measurement pages or what can used instead of this page.
My step dad had one really old.... wish I'd thought to take that when he passed. His family came to the USA from Lativa in 1940 something... his mom had notes in it in her language. I think it was from the 50's the clothing style of the woman in the pictures makes me think that.
I have 34 pages typed up so far of recipes. I'm tossing out all my notes and recipes once I get them typed. I can't get over how many had in that drawer written on receipts and checkbook pages! LOL
This is a homemade cleaner that I use to clean everything. I have it in a spray bottle for most things and also throw a small glug into my mopping water. It is easy and cheap to make and makes your house smell lovely. And it works.....
BTW, I an over in the land of OZ, so all measure are metric. I don't thing that you would need to be too exact in your conversion...
1 litre water
200ml vinegar
40ml detergent
40ml eucalyptus oil - must be 100% pure
2 dessert spoons washing soda.
Mix together and enjoy:rolleyes:
Vikki - I put a spray bottle of this and the recipe in a few of the gift baskets that I made up for Christmas last year. A bit bizarre, but it was in the 'hmemade' theme. My Brother expecially likes it, although as a single 40 something male I think I will be making more and giving it to him. I just can't se him making it up himself. DS20 is a truck mechanic and loves it to clean the shower. A combination of the detergent (for the grease) and the eucalyptus which is great for getting especially tricky things clean..

Yeah I don't see any of the guys mixing it up for themselves. Using it YES, but mixing NO. LOL

Boil water and baking soda in it to make the burnt stuff come off
I've given this to my DS20 (courtesy of one of my fravourite web sites). I will also put it in the recipe book. He wanted a basic shopping list one day, so I found this.

The recipe book is a great idea Vikkijo , not sure I've got many to share seeing my DH does most of the cooking now, I had to smile reading about the ladies still with the recipes books but not the husband, the first thing I bought on honeymoon was a rolling pin, much to the amusement of everyone but forty one years later I still use the rolling pin and still have the husband.
LOL! Hope you never had to use it (other than for pies of course)!

I got worried when I saw Rolling Pin..... LOL
You'll have to sit in the kitchen and ask hubby questions and share them here!
One year I invited my mom, her boyfriend and my Grama to a dinner at my house.
I made a ham, dinner rolls, potato salad, macaroni salad, deviled eggs.
My Grama made her Cranberry Jello Ring to bring. (that was usually only for Christmas Dinner)
The kids colored eggs with the Grama's.
My mom and Grama were constantly bringing up how I made such a lovely Easter Dinner for years!
So that's kinda how I think of dinner for Easter. Clint and I invited his parents and his Grama Grace over the year before we lost her. I made the same dinner.
That though that was great Spring Luncheon.
His parents run away to Texas for the winter and they came back after Easter.
I've been making a book for both of my daughters in a 3 ring binder. Pages are scrapbooked and in page protectors. I'm going to add conversion charts and the important tips. Been working on forever but love it
This is a great idea! I had already gathered some things for my son's first year at college. I hadn't thought about a cookbook.
I did buy him a nice spray bottle and a bottle of bleach and wrote "Add one TBL bleach to bottle of water for sanitizing solution" on the bottle and gave it to him filled with bleach water. He's supposed to use it after cleaning to kill off the germs. I found out he used it but never re-filled the bottle! Such a guy thing!

Vikkijo, I came across your herb and seasoning pages and think they are absolutely fabulous!!
I have been gathering things here and there for my daughter's "cookbook" over the past couple of years, but haven't officially put anything together yet.
She is 13 and every time I say something to her about cooking with me or learning to cook, she tells me, "I can cook, all I need is a recipe to follow." The logic of a teenager. ;)
Since it is apparent that she has no desire, at this time, to share my love of food and cooking, I figured putting a book together for her was a good option. I had thought of something along the lines of your herb pages for tips, but yours are wonderful, so I will be copying them.
When I was young, we always had a garden and I remember every season canning and freezing food with my Mom and Grandma. We used to make pretty much everything: pickles, jellies/jams, sauerkraut, etc. I think one year we even made pickled cauliflower. Pretty much everything we ate was made from scratch and tasted SO good. I really miss that; I just don't have the time right now but think about doing it often.
My daughter did ask if she could have a garden this year and promised she would be responsible for it, so maybe there is some hope yet...

a garden will be so cool! Make sure it's small... i wanted 1 too and got carried away and it was just to much for me and I lost interest quick!
Memorial Day (we used to drive up to Grama's then go over to the cemetery, we'd spend the whole weekend at Grama's)

October is Halloween but I don't really count that for anything

for the life of me I can't remember my 3 sister's fave's! LOL
I never liked Sloppy Joe's so I have no idea how my mom got that in her head it was my fave.

I am not at all fond of sloppy joes either Vikki! My favorite casserole is here: Campbell's Kitchen: Hearty Chicken & Noodle Casserole
In place of the one cup frozen veggie I usually use a can of cream style corn. Tom made it last night. He used the cream style corn and added cooked carrots as well. You can change it around to add whatever you want. We always add more cheddar cheese than it calls for too. Maybe cuz we are from Wisconsin!
