I don't know if it is just their school district or the whole state, but they have done away with teaching cursive writting in school. My niece is 9 and has beautiful penmanship. I told her if she wanted to practice it she could write me letters and I would write her back. Hence, the cards to them each month.
Long and short - I need 2 cards for January.
It was on the morning news back in September when school started. They were talking about the kids (immigrants) that 'didn't get it'
In an effort to keep those children in school.. it is being dropped.

My mom used to write notes to my kids and they would practice writing skills to respond. It was great
My Great Aunt sent me a letter asking me if I would mind doing email.. her writing was beautiful and perfect. Although it is in pencil I want to keep that letter.
