LOL! Imagine being away at college and having to place a call home. You'd tell the operator your three digit number and she'd ask for the rest of it. You'd have to convince them to just try it, and then when the call went thru, the "live" operator on the other end would ask you how things were going at school. My local switchboard was the last one in the nation to go to seven digit phone numbers.
Our full phone number was 800F33. Obviously before "800" numbers. But you're right about the local operator chiming in on the conversation.
