DEC11VSNMINI6 ~ Friday, Nov 11th ~10 pm EST ~ Get Out the Salt!
Title: Get Out the Salt!
Hostess: Carole K (ckbythesea)
Keyword: DEC11VSNMINI6
Day/Date: Friday, Nov 11th
Time: 10:00pm EST
We don't get much snow here at the beach. But when we do have snow and ice, the businesses in town don't want anyone slipping and falling on their sidewalks, especially our large population of retirees! So they get out the salt!
Tonight we are going to get out the salt and salt those icy sidewalks! My challenge is to use the Salted Background technique to create a piece for your card or other project. I have linked a tutorial below for you, but here are a few notes of my own:
The main specialty item you will need is glossy cardstock. Salt: plain old table salt works fine if you don't have "chunkier" varieties like rock salt. You will need something to watercolor with (water color brush or aqua-painter). When choosing your dye ink, two or more colors is really fun, but with just one you still can achieve a nice subtle effect. To speed up drying time you can use a heat tool.
If you are adventurous and want something BOLD, try a brayer to apply the ink in layers of color, spinkle on salt and spray some water on with a mister. The purple sample (1) below was created with a brayer. Fun!
1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 8:00 PM EST Monday Nov. 14th
2. You have 45 minutes to complete your project for the challenge. (You can speed up drying time with a heat tool or even a hair dryer!)
3. Please remember to put in the correct keyword, DEC11VSNMINI6 , when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos. It is also recommended that you post a link to your creation in this chat thread to be sure your layout is seen.
4. HAVE FUN!

Fabulous samples! I can't wait to get into some salt. I have only tried this once and I used regular table salt. I'm eager to try some chunkier salt we have in the house now!
All I can say is - Yuk! What a mess! There's got to be a neater way of doing this! I have salt all over the place and ink all over my fingers! At any rate - here's my card:
Love the idea, hate my results.
Perhaps it was because my paper wasn't wet enough or maybe because I tried to use an ink pad instead of a reinker.
I'm going to have to give this technique another try on another day. I really like the samples I've seen ... I just don't like mine. :-) DEC11VSNMINI6 water, salt, ink by melissa59 - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers
Mine did not turn out well so I will have to try again tomorrow. I didn't have glossy so I used photo paper and it didn't work out well at all. I will have to try the watercolor paper later or tomorrow. :(
I finished all the cards, just waiting for some glue to dry (flower soft glue takes forever to dry) I am planning to take my pictures and do my uploads tomorrow. Great challenges from everyone! Now to wait for the 11-11-11 surprise!
Well...I have started my second attempt. I am going to jump in the bathtub and hopefully it is dry when I get out so I can finish it. I don't know if that will still "qualify" for completing it in 45 minutes though? LOL

Not a problem unless you are stamping while you're in the tub!!:p
I'm going to post mine for this challenge tomorrow. I want to let it dry on its own rather than use the heat gun. I want to see if that makes a difference.

I guess everyone will be tucked up in bed but I'm still going it's nearly eleven pm here I've been going since eight this morning but I have had quite a few breaks. I just loved doing this, I really like playing with colour. I thought about it while I was getting tea ready and then did the salted background, had tea and whatched some telly while I waited for it to dry I stopped the timer while that was happening. Had to go over the three wise men with my black copic because the salt wouldn't let the stazon stay on.
