If you are talking about the doily dies, they primarily cut. If, by "emboss," you mean a Spellbinders effect (where parts of the design are cut and other parts are raised areas revealed by a 2nd embossing pass through the machine) then I don't think they'll give you that effect.
The doilies do have a lot of "texture" to them, though, because of the great deal of intricute cutting.
On another note entirely, the doily die looks amazing if you use it just to emboss (that is, run it through an embossing sandwich INSTEAD of cutting).
Other Cheery Lynn dies appear to have more of a Spellbinders-style open-face design where some design parts are created through cutting and others through embossing. But I'm speaking for the doily die that I own from them.
