Need some ideas for door decorations for nursing home please!

My kids club is sponsoring a nearby nursing home and I want to make some door decorations. I want to include their name and a decoration and it will go on or beside the door on the wall. I wondered if anyone has seen any ideas for something like this or done something like this. I dont think it should be too large - maybe like 12 x 8 at the most. Any ideas would be appreciated!

Not sure if you are planning on having the kids do the "making?"

One thing that's great with kids of just about all ages are handprint decorations...Remember the handprint turkeys we used to make for Thanksgiving???

They get to get all inky or painty (fingerpaints are great), and turn their own handprint(s) into something cool, like a flower, heart, fish, etc...

I would make anything with craft foam. It will last longer than something done in paper and be more sturdy to hang on wall or door.

I've worked with both kids groups and seniors and they all enjoy making things with craft foam. You can purchase kits that make many projects or purchase the pieces individually. Letters and shapes of all kinds plus half flat sheets to mount the pieces on. Many of the pieces are sticky back.

It would be light weight and not bulky - thus not getting in the way of any aides or visitors.

ITA! My grandma is in a nursing home and loves seasonal items to decorate her door. Depending on the season, you could make flowers, patriotic items like stars, fall leaves, etc.

I was thinking that you could buy a large bag of styrofoam plates, use a whole one for the back and a half one flipped over and sewn together around the bottom with yarn (the color(s) of the season) and adhere the name on the front. Then the inside could be filled with the seasonal items--leaves, eggs, ornament, pumpkins, flags, etc. Easy for kids to make themselves and a variety of ways to fill them and still be light enough to hang.

What a great project! Have to put in a plug for a big perpetual calendar. I made one using laminated letters and numbers from my Cricut that I laminated onto cards, also did seasonal cards to add. Everything went onto the main poster board with Velcro. If someone at the nursing home volunteers to maintain it, it can be super nice for the residents. Seeing the day of the week, the date, colors, and the snowflakes, hearts, umbrellas, and other decorations was great for my grandmother and others, and the head of nursing loved it. I also did signs for my grandmother's hall with the names of the residents and some decorations. We felt that all the doors looked alike and it would make the rooms feel more "them."

I was just at the OC fair here in so. calif., and there was a big display of fun foam, they made lots of 3 dimentional things, layer the flowers and things, for a much nicer look!

We took the kids caroling with the church at the nursing home and noticed a lot of vintage themes. Especially in the alzheimer's unit.

Also lots of the doors were themes about the lives of the residents. One man's door incorporated military while a woman's was a baking theme. Not sure how in depth, but if you're decorating resident's doors, maybe ask them what they like and go what that theme?

When my grandmother was in a nursing home I made a Christmas decoration for her door. I altered coasters to spell the word JOY and then on the bottom I think I stamped a wreath. It was a big hit with everyone. You might find some group to donate the coasters, maybe the Elks lodge or something along those lines. I is a great way for you to use up paper you have around.
