MAY11VSNM ~ Saturday, May 21 ~ 8:00PM EDT ~ Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum!
Title: Yo Ho Ho and a Bottle of Rum!
Hostess: Sandy (stampingwriter)
Keyword: MAY11VSNM
Day / Date: Saturday May 21,
Time: 8 pm EST
Well, me hearties, if youve ever seen a pirate movie, or even a pirate cartoon, youve probably seen a bunch of pirates singing "Fifteen men on the dead man's chest --.Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! Drink and the devil had done for the rest -- ...Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"
While pirates have a (probably well-deserved) reputation for swigging rum, that ditty didnt spring from a pirate ship, but from the pen of Robert Louis Stevenson, who created it for the pirates tale Treasure Island in the late 1800s.
But were not here today to talk about alcohol were here to use it in stamping. Alcohol inks, alcohol markers and rubbing alcohol are all supplies used for various techniques. And, me swabbies, if you can find a simple Sharpie marker somewhere in your house, you are the proud owner of an alcohol marker and can try some of these techniques.
This is a Ways to Use it challenge, so be creative. If you dont have the supplies to do a fancy technique, think of creative ways to use your alcohol. Sharpie markers or alcohol inks (did you forget you have a few bottles buried in your stash?) can be used to color brads and other non-porous embellishments, for example. Bonus points to those who try a technique theyve never tried before.
"Non-alcoholic Alternative Challenge" Your treasure chest doesn't include alcohol-based supplies? Instead of walking the plank, set sail for your drink-themed stamps (coffee, tea, champagne, margaritas etc) for your card for this challenge.
Some techniques to consider:
Alcohol ink on non porous surface (this is basically polished stone and can be done on anything from glossy paper to aluminum foil to dominoes):
Alcohol ink faux bleach technique
Alcohol markers with pencils
Colorless blender bleaching
Drunken chalks (uses chalk ink and rubbing alcohol)
Misting with alcohol markers
Texture with alcohol markers
Michelle Zindorf tutorial on coloring with alcohol inks on acetate.
Sandy's Sharpie background technique
VIEW THE GALLERY FOR THIS CHALLENGE HERE
Uploading instructions:
1. ALL VSN CREATIONS MUST BE UPLOADED BY 8 PM EST MONDAY MAY 23RD, 2011.
2. You have 45 minutes to complete the challenge
3. PLease remember to use the correct keyword, MAY11VSNM, when uploading your image. Copying and pasting the challenge keyword is recommended to avoid typos.
It is also highly recommended that you post a link to your creation in this thread to be sure your card is seen.

For my sample, I did coloring with alcohol inks on acetate (the Zindorf tutorial linked above) I also used Ranger alcohol ink to color the brads (they went from regular silver to cranberry.)

Did you know that a brown sharpie and a black sharpie mixed together come pretty close to Early Espresso? Check it out!

You learn something every day!.
I've used the Ranger coffee colors (espresso, latte...) to color brads and stuff when I was using browns on my card. My sharpies are all pastels, but they work, too.

I'm not sure, though I don't know why they wouldn't. (I have the brown Ranger alcohol inks, and that's what I've used to get brown brads.)

I have to go now. I don't want to walk the plank so I will finish the last two challenges later tonight. Believe it or not I am going to go see the new Johnny Depp Pirates of the Carabean movie and it starts soon - so must go.
I have really enjoyed all the challenges and learned lot's.

I have had that stamp for years and it seemed perfect for the party. I remember using it for a line of cards I made for a make your own wine store. They sold out pretty fast.
Thanks for a great challenge.

First time trying the Polished Stone technique. Like the technique. The card? Not so much but loved the opportunity to try something new!

Here's Frankie, cute isn't he! I used Ranger alcohol inks for the back ground, I call it the swipe techneque. you just blob some ink, different colours, in a line across your applicator and swipe, great fun.Frankie is done with my trusty copic markers. Hardest part of this card was cutting Frankie out. He is actually mounted but it doesn't show up in the photo.
It's lunch time here and I'm starving, so I'm going to take a break then keep going, you all must be getting ready to jump in your hamocks.
