How can I make my own embossing folders
I have a wonderful Big Shot and quite a few embossing folders. Quite by accident I ended up embossing some card with a paper clip stuck to it. It looked odd of course but it did emboss. So it got me thinking has anyone used anything around the house? I was thinking of trying plastic mesh and maybe the old plastic doilies. Maybe even coins;)
So I'm going to look at everything around the place and try and come up with a few ideas. Love to hear from others.
There are plenty of tutorials around for using things like die cut or punched shapes stuck to a sheet of thin chipboard to make an embossing plate. I'm actually waiting for the glue to dry on a brick wall textured one at the moment!
You basically need something that has a high enough profile and not too much "give" in its own right to get a decent impression. If it's too thick the paper you're embossing will tend to tear as it tried to stretch over the object but a but of experimentation will soon have you finding lots of things that will work!

Thanks I'll have to see if I can find the tutorials. Can you show me the card when you finnish the brick wall. This is just the sort of thing I'm looking for, thinking outside the square and also not spending too much on templates/folders.
I purchased a empty embossing folder made by provocraft and extra refill paper for it. This set mades it very easy to make your own and now that I have 1 empty folder and see the thickness of the paper they offer in the kit..I know I can probably do it with Gina K paper becasue it is so thick (worse care would to layer that paper twice). It made it wonderful if you have a cricut to make your own style Embossing folders. But you could do it without the cricut!

She does have some great tutorials for this! On this link, the final picture of the SU! Baroque stamp made into an embossing plate...I made one and it's wonderful!!! I think it's my favorite embossing plate I have.
Thanks for the reminder of this DIY project. Just may have to make a few more now!
I've followed Mel's tutorial to make a couple of these, too. They're more "texture plates" than embossing folders, but they're wonderful! I hand-cut some stamped hibiscus for THIS ONE (also attached below), and punched some bats for THIS ONE (attached it, too). There's pretty much no limit except your patience and imagination!
Betsy Veldman posted to her blog a really neat way to make your own embossing folders using a cricut machine. I haven't tried it, but it looks really cool!
I love this idea, and can't wait to try it, but on Mel's blog she uses Mod Podge. I get sick from the smell of that, is there something else I could use?
I just made my own last weekend. I just used cardboard and punched out leaves from my dies and glued them on. It works well. I'll have to make a card and show it.

I used Aleen's Tacky Glue. Wait 24 hours before you run your plate through, just to be sure that the glue is set. You wouldn't want it to move.

I use Royal Coat Decoupage Finish. I'm not a fan of Mod Podge (don't hate me!) It always feels tacky to me, even after it's dry...
Definite yes on the plastic canvas mesh (sold in cross stitch section). I've been using it to emboss for a couple of years and it works & looks great.
This is one of first ones I did w/ the mesh: My Little Chickadees The 2nd white layer and the turq side panel w/ the feathers were both done w/ the plastic mesh.
i also did a tutorial here on SCS to make a faux embossed bg using die cuts and a die cut machine. Embossing with Die Cuts (Sorry, but you'll need to be a Fan Club member to see this link). I also used the mesh again on the card as well as the die cuts on this card that went w/ the tutorial: Discover Geography (Below is just a close up. The actual card is in the Dirty Dozen gallery)
These are just a couple of things I tried and liked I'm sure lots of other things will, too!

You can get the plastic canvas mesh in a circle, too (it has a circular pattern).
I bought some a couple of years ago to do paper piercing before realizing that I am the world's worst paper piercer. Now I can try this with it (because of course I could not throw it away).

I found another use for that too - if you spread a texture paste and then lift the mesh off, you get a micro mosaic thing going on. I used Viva Decor Ferro but any texture paste that will work with things like the Dreamweaver stencils will do. I rubbed some Rub n Buff over once it was dry - I've attached a sample, hope you can see!
Angelnorth, that is soooo cool!!!! I have lots of plastic canvas and mesh in lots of shapes. Going to give it a go this weekend. Thanks, everyone, for all the great ideas
