Default TLC52 - I'll Melt with You

This week's challenge is all because of cobrielle and her awesome challenge in FEBVSN. I had never tried Melted Crayon Background before, and was amazed at how COOL and FUN it was! Thanks Jen for the push to try something new and different. If you have already done one for VSN...make another, ok?

You can find the directions on the resources page:
Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers

And more info from Jen's challenge:

First thing you're going to do is take that tin foil and COMPLETELY cover the bottom of your iron with it--make sure it's turned off first, don't wanna burn those creative little fingers! (This is to protect your iron from getting covered in ooey-gooey melty crayons!!!!)

Now that we've got that covered (I'm so punny!!) we're going to take a piece of neutral cardstock--you can use colored c/s too if ya want--and put it on a few layers of scrap paper on the ironing board. (The paper is to protect your board.)

NOW
turn on the iron to a medium heat and let it get warm. When your iron is warm, the fun stuff can begin!!!!!!!!

On the tin foil (which is warm now) you are going to scribble crayons. You can do several colors at once on the iron, or one at a time. Multiple colors at once tend to get a little muddy when you iron--so keep that in mind! I prefer to do one color at a time

It melts pretty much instantly. Now that it's nice and melty you're going to literally iron it onto your neutral/colored cardstock. The way you iron determines the look of the crayon. You can press down, hold it still and lift up, you can swipe your iron in a straight line, or you can swipe your iron in a curve/swoopy line. This is the method I prefer!!!
I always start with the lightest color first (I generally stay in a color family, or pick a couple of co-ordinating colors) iron it on, and then go to the next darkest shade and iron it on, repeating until I get the look I want!

Here is my inspiration card (pending at time of posting....I didn't want you stalkers (oops I mean stampers:mrgreen to have to wait any longer! ) :
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

And if you want to see all the ones created for VSN, search the gallery for "FEBVSNO"

As always, if you have questions, please ask. If you have suggestions, please share!
When you upload, please put TLC52 in the keyword section when you upload, and then post a link to your card here in this thread.

If you are new to the challenges, please feel free to do this one or ANY of the challenges at any time. There is no time limit. They are not races to see who can do one first, nor are they contests of any sort. All the challenges are simply to provide inspiration and to get us STAMPIN' !!
If you need help with uploading your card to the gallery or posting a link, click here!

I always wanted to try this...but I am nervous!
It is great to have a challenge and know that there are others out there trying new things right along with me!
I appreciate your time and energy in doing this for us!

Oh man, that card cobrielle made with this technique was just amazing! It's been niggling the back of my mind to try this since I saw what she did, so this is a great challenge! Thanks Beth!

Good morning, Beth! Isn't it great to be loved?

Oh, goody, goodie, goodee... I did not get to try this for VSN, because DH was watching TV in the room where my craft iron happens to be set up & he likes it dark & I would have had to turn on some lights! So now I can play with it. I think I better print out the instructions! LOL

I don't even know if we have crayons in our house anymore :( Maybe I will pick up a box when I go out later if I can't find some here at home. That's what happens when you have 2 teenagers who only like SU watercolor pencils, markers or watercolor crayons! LOL

Irons can be used for some amazing things! My oldest DD (now 26) had NO idea what the pretend iron/ironing board in the preschool room were!! Everyone got a good laugh out of that, and I pulled the iron and ironing board out before my next two DD's went to preschool and explained that some people like their clothes very flat. In college I used to cook a grilled cheese on my iron (wrapped in foil - set on cotton and turn over when it starts to smell good!). Hmmm... maybe that's why ironing my clothes never went so well! <G>

Anyway, I'm eager to try this challenge!

I have to go digging around in my DS's room and see if I can round up some crayons. Do you think if I take some he will notice? ;)

Well, this is turning out to be more of a challenge than I thought! (no, not the challenge itself!) I was starting to get really bummed! We have, LITERALLY, an ice cream bucket full of crayons! Do you think I can find it? NOT! OK, here's the good part... my DD is almost 20 - sophomore in college... my DS is 17 - senior in HS... Would either of them have the crayons? I wouldn't think so. But, they are not HERE! The only thing I can figure is that maybe DD took them to school with her (she's going to art school). I did manage to find a smaller container of crayons.

SO... I go cover the iron, turn it on, get my card stock (cut a sheet into quarters, so I can try a few, go pick out a few colors... turn the iron around & put the first color on the iron... NOTHING! I forgot it's plugged into one of those outlets that I have to turn on the light switch to activate.

OK, should be hot now.... I hope you are all laughing... I'll be back...

Sounds like my kind of morning, Melody!

Kathy, I'd be happy to share the buckets of crayons we have, if you lived closer!!

Looking forward to trying this later -- thanks for the challenge, Beth!

yeah!
one thing i've learned when doing this tech. or wax resist....do a couple pages of the technique (since you have everything out) and just keep a folder of technique's that way you don't have to pull everything out.

i already have a few pages with just the crayon. so i'll bbl!

this was mine from the VSN challenge (actually my second attempt, didn't post the first cause I got a little carried away with the colors).

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

I am going to try another one today if I can sneak the ironing board and iron into my craft room without DD seeing me.

Thanks Beth!!!

I have never tried this technique - it always seemed so much work to get that iron out from under the bed - but I'm home today, too and wanted to play! It was SO easy!

I was happy with the way mine came out and the very best part is (after I raided my daughter's crayon box) that I used a crayon called "macaroni and cheese!"

Here's mine:

I made up some melted crayon backgrounds last week but haven't used them on any cards yet. When my husband saw what I was doing, he was so interested. Told me I should try that on canvas board. He dug out some little 4"x6" canvas boards and gave them to me. Then he went and bought me some bigger ones. He wants me to make some to sell at an art show next month. I made 2 little ones that aren't too bad and one that really stunk. The interesting thing about melted crayons is you really can't control the design too much. I will try to get the two uploaded sometime today. My husband did not think I was losing it when he saw me playing with the crayons and my iron. It helps to be married to an artist. I can do crazy things and he doesn't think he should commit me to an insane asylum. I still need to make some cards with the backgrounds I already have.

Took me a few attempts to get something that wasn't mud! And then, of course, my wacko, funky sense of humor kicked in. Explanation enough... Here's my surfer chick.

Tried it. mmmmm - not what I was hoping for. Not gonna post this one. Maybe with more practice, or maybe . . . NOT! lol
Thanks for the challenge anyway! Maybe next time. Ü

WhooooooHoooo! I've got 2 BG's in different colors made. I used glossy paper. Hot, slippery, gooey and fun, fun, fun. Now all I have to do is make at least one card. I am off to work out and then the Olympics on tv. Might not happern today, but sure had a fun start. Thanks Beth, Nancy

Default melted crayon

Oh how fun! I have not done this since Beate's tutorial. I did quite a few of them, one tip I have is- if you have any glitter crayons, the backgrounds are awesome - give it a try!!! Looks so much prettier IRL...

Also, my iron got all gunked up because the foil ripped, so now I have a craft iron and a 'regular' iron!!!

Thanks for all of the challenges!
