They've banned creosote here on health and safety grounds, as far as I know. For a while there was even an issue as to whether people were allowed to buy the old railway ties (we call them sleepers here) for their gardens. But Dad always used to use it on the outdoor woodwork at home - it's one of those nostalgia smells for me. Like Ina I'd thought of it as being chemical until I saw your photo.
