Default The $200 birthday card

I wanted to start making cards.
I bought a stamp set, a pack of plain cardstock and one pack of DP from SU . I bought a black Memento ink pad at Hobby Lobby

The X-acto knife and ruler was a nuisance so back to the store for a paper cutter and a bone folder for the creases
I also needed baby wipes to clean the stamps

I stamped the image and wanted to color it. I found that now I needed to buy a Staz-On ink pad for the Tombows I just bought

The Elmer's glue left a lot to be desired so I ordered some Scor-Tape

The card still looked a bit plain. I saw cards using Nesties and they looked great so I went back to the store for a Cuttlebug and a set of plain edge oval Nesties. After I cut the plain edge oval I could see I needed the scalloped ovals too so back to the store for those.
While I was buying the scalloped Nesties I also had to buy dimensionals to prop up the ovals.
Back home

Oops, I don't have a Happy Birthday stamp and while I am at the store for that I need a set of Spellbinder tags for the Birthday greeting stamp.

The card is looking great except now it needs a bow so back to the store for ribbon.
Oh Oh, I didn't have any envelopes so you guessed it back to the store to buy envelopes . ( I didn't have a scoring board then to make them)

$200 and a few months later I had finished a Birthday card LOL

Does this saga sound familiar?

I went from a tool box to a rubbermaid tote to a CD tower to some built-in cabinetry and bookshelves to get all that I thought I NEEDED to make a card!! It slowly takes over!! But, we all KNOW that it's cheaper and much more thoughtful to MAKE a card than it is to BUY one that is already made, RIGHT??? Soooo cost economical!! ;)

When I first started there was no cuttlebug or spellbinder so is just 2 sets of PSX box stamps, deckle scissors, PSX embossing ink set, a few bottles of ep and some tombow brushes. Somewhere ard $200 too. From there on it grew to what it is today.

Too funny, Barbara. Isn't it so fun?! I refuse to admit that I have spent thousands of dollars on this fun hobby. And I still contend that it's more economical to make my own cards. That's my story, and I'm sticking with it!

Hey, you got off cheap. I ended up getting enough stuff for about $500, and that was just the one, by the time I did the others, much more. And I still don't have a die cutter or nesties. lol. Enjoy your new hobby. Its the only way you can justify the expense. lol.

I always joke with my co-worker/friend who also makes cards by bringing in a card to show her that I have recently made...I'll say, "Look at this card I made for so and so, it was only $1,000" and we laugh!

ROTFL!!!! "Why spend $3 on a store bought card when you can spend $300 and make your own" I can't remember where I first heard it but it still makes me laugh. It's got to be cheaper and more fun than therapy though. Hee-hee!

You made me laugh out loud!!

How true is that! I've come to learn that anything I want to make ends up to be more expensive than I thought. Oh, another thing is that it always takes more time than I thought it would.

I love sending cards. My first time to stamp was at a SU party. I did not buy anything and I thought "oh, I can get this cheaper at a store."

Trip to the store - $75 cause they were all so cute but not exactly like the set I used.

Stamp set discontinued - bought 8 years later.

Still have not made that card but I do have thousands of dollars invested and it is now a room in the house. I am thinking "what have I done???"

Go to buy a card on the way to a party--$9.00. Figured how many cards I have made at $9 and I have saved thousands!

It is a balancing act, kwim??

I'm so glad you brought this up. My hubs rolls his eyes every time a package arrives for me. Truth is, most of my stamps are free, but I do spend a fair amount on adhesives, paper and embellishments.

Then I was in the garage yesterday after he did some cleaning and rearranging. The man has 16 tape measures, four ladders, 22 clamps, 21 rechargeable batteries for his uncountable Ryobi tools. That's just the tip of the iceberg. I stopped looking after that.

I agree on the high cost of this extremely fun and rewarding hobby, however, I keep reminding my family members that they're getting a little piece of love with their purchase. You can't put a price tag on that. Then if we calculate the savings on therapy....

That $200 birthday card is looking like a bargain, to me

I'm with you sisters!!! I first went to a SU workshop with my daughter in law. When I went no interest whatsoever. After, I was interested but not hooked. The next month I went to a Stamp Camp. Two months later I had a workshop. 30 women showed up!! Glad I rented a space!! $2000 workshop. Signed up to be a Demp that night. I'm still a Demo and love SU. But the problem is I just have to have EVERTHING!! My craft room is slowly taking over the basement!! My husband asked me if I knew how much money was wrapped up in my toys. I told him I had a pretty good idea. Well, How much? I told him it was on a strickly need to know basis and he didn't need to know!! I still maintain this is the best addiction to have!!

The card was actually a bargain. Except for the stuff from SU I bought everything for it when things were on sale or with a coupon.
I shutter to think of the cost if I paid full price for this stuff.

I can relate to the person who said first she had a tool tote; then Rubbermaid's and now a dedicated room with built in cabinets for her stuff. I am still at the rubbermaid/ Iris drawers stage. Oi - LOL
I graduated from the copy paper box to Iris drawers

I figure this is my therapy and overall less expensive than Dr. bills would be!

I gave it to my Granddaughter. I will see if I can get it back to take a picture of it .

I can't possibly justify the cost of this stuff so I don't bother. I am just enjoying myself

My philosophy is : When we are working, we trade hours of our lives for money. We can never have those hours back. It is important that we trade the money for things we need or that make us happy.
The money I spend on this hobby is a good trade.
