We just renovated mine and painted it bright white. I found being in the basement the colours on the walls really played with the colours of my papers and projects looked "different" when I brought them out into the real light!
So I painted my accent wall (the one behind my work table) I bright baby blue! And the shelves and peg board were painted the same. the rest of the furniture is white or wood finished.
