Default DGC057 - Masking 102 - 08/31/10

Hi Everyone.
I have a new technique for you this week. We are changing up the order we introduce the new challenges. The next will be two weeks from now. You can take all the time you need to play in these challenges, have fun!

This week we are going to learn another technique for the out of frame or out of bounds look using masking.

Photoshop Elements does not have a masking option like it's big brother Photoshop B U T there is a work around! Yea, yippee.

Here is your new tutorial for Masking 102. Grab it HERE.
If you have any questions, please let me know in this thread or you can PM me at MaggieMay.

Your Challenge is to:

Create a layout or card using the masking technique described in the above tutorial. Use it as a guide and be as creative as you like. Your page or card must have one element, photo, etc., that you use the technique.

Have a great time with this new challenge. I hope you learn some fun new things and have a creative and fun challenge. If you have any questions, please let me know or post in this thread. There are many talented members
here who can answer questions and give out more ideas.

So let's get ready to have fun, to share ideas and to inspire each other with out layouts!

To start the challenge off, here is my layout.

The Bug

You can view all submissions for this challenge here: DGC057 Gallery

To add your page to this gallery, just add DGC057 to your keywords. Please also add SBC10AUG in the keywords. This makes it easier for us to search and find your layouts. Oh, and if you would, please take a minute to post a link on this thread so we won’t miss seeing your work! Sometimes I have a hard time finding your layouts. If you want to send me a PM with a link to your layout, that would be great as well.

Have a great week! I look forward to seeing your layouts.

Oh, and one more thing -- don't forget to leave a little love for others when they leave love for you. Everyone likes to read comments about their work!![/font]-------------------------------------------
SBC's Information Thread: Everything you need to know to participate!

PLEASE NOTE:
A New Digi Challenge will be posted every other Tuesday. Have fun and check back again on September 14th for our next challenge.__________________

O.K. I loved this challenge, I got to it right after Laura posted it.

I like the technique, (especially with Laura's amazing example), but I had trouble finding a photo I thought would work. I picked this one, but realized (after I'd done all the masking work) that I'd have to place my frame at the bottom of the page, because Mr. Incredible's legs were not showing in my photo and he would've been ankle and footless on the page if I'd kept the photo higher!

I'm going to mess with that same photo again and see if I could mask his lower leg area with a soft blending effect, thereby allowing me to have the frame higher on the page, which I would prefer. (Does that make any sense??)

Mr. Incredible & Friends

I LOVE this technique! And I love the way you make it work. I've done it before with a more complicated tutorial, so I'm anxious to try this and make it easier! I'm all for easier!

Here are my two that I've already done, but I promise I'll do another one for the challenge.

just droppin in

Yeah Michigan

Hi Candy,
You're no trouble, you're fun!!!

Okay on the frame, did you make it's own adjustment layer below the frame layer? did you group the frame layer with that adjustment mask? With the mask active, click on the mask (the white box to the right of the adjustment thingie (how do you like that word? LOL) to be sure it's active. Did you then grab a brush with foreground color black and background color white?

I'll be looking for Laura's response too, because I didn't use the second adjustment layer to erase my frame line as the tut suggested. I wound up clicking on the frame layer and permanently erasing the line over my image. My method worked, but as Laura said in her tutorial, erasing is a permanent move rather than non-destructive if you use the adjustment layer.

Edit:

Oh boy, your're fast, Laura! By the time I finished this you already had responded to Candy!

Wendy!
Our timing was a bit off is all. chuckle chuckle

Yes, just plain erasing that part of the frame works, too!:p And that's usually how I do it as well, but this time I was just thinking of ways to use masking!

I'm so glad that worked for you, Candy. Thanks Wendy for your help! Isn't this fun? I know sometimes it can be frustrating especially when your program isn't working for you. I believe Photoshop has a mind of its own sometimes! but it didn't slow Candy down - beautiful page.

I like the variety of ways to do things, sometimes one way just "clicks." I personally appreciate all input!

Here is mine! DGC057 Marathon Race Page by kristiemlane - Cards and Paper Crafts at Splitcoaststampers Holy cow this was hard...stayed up until after one doing it, but it was worth it! It is kind of rough as I didn't take the time to careful mask out around the image, but I'll do it better next time Of course I'm not sure I can pull it off again! LOL

Thanks so much for this challenge and somehow I got it together for my layout, but I wondered if you could better explain this part in the tutorial:

"Then click back on your layer mask and paint. For example, I used the Quick Select Tool to select the car. I inversed the selection, clicked on the mask and painted out the background."

I wasn't quite sure what you meant by the painting?? When I tried inversing it and clicking it didn't really do anything. Just wondered if I'm missing something

Also, when you say "Use any of the selection tools to help select the part of the object you want to keep" should I select just the part outside of the frame, or the both inside and outside of the frame?

Thanks so much for all your help!

Oh my gosh, that doesn't sound very clear when I read it back this time. I will go into PHotoshop Elements and see if I can make the selection tool part more clear. In the meantime, painting means to grab a soft edged brush and paint with black on the mask to hide or paint with white to reveal. So you paint away the parts of the photo you don't want, if you get too much, switch to white and you can paint some of the photo back.

You can just as easily erase the parts of the photo you do not want, but it you take a little too much, you'll have to undo. With the mask, you have more control. Does that help?

Here's how I do the break out technique.
  • Bring photo into photoshop
  • Drag in and size a frame (can also do a stroked selection)
  • Click photo layer and use lasso tool to do a rough selection the part of the image that will be the break out. Be sure to include the image inside the frame.
  • Copy selection to a new layer and name it Break Out
  • Hide the photo layer
  • Remove background from the break out layer (selection tools, eraser, masking - whatever you are comfortable with)
  • Move breakout layer above frame layer
  • Unhide photo
  • Click on the frame layer
  • Use magic wand selector and click outside the frame
  • Expand selection (Select/Modify/Expand) if needed so that it is at the edge is right at or just inside the outer edge of the frame.
  • Click the photo layer and press delete
  • Create a new layer under the break out layer and name it Shadow
  • Use a soft brush to paint in a shadow behind the breakout.

If you need visuals, I have it on my blog with the images.

Hi ladies, I think I can get back to my digi scrapping finally. It has been a long summer. Sold our house that we lived in for 33 years and moved to a smaller home, all on one level, and less land so a lot less yard work to do! Phew, what a summer, it has been super humid here too so that made cleaning out and cleaning up very unpleasant. Found out I can't work as hard as I used to, need more breaks, lol. I have been looking at the challenges and anxious to take part in them. I found one in my gallery that I think would fit the out-of-bounds technique. That is such a fun way to do a page.

Great to "see" you, Marcia. Glad you survived your move. Doesn't sound like the process was fun, but your new place sounds good! Enjoy!

Hope to see you more often now!

Well...I've been working on this one. Was trying to paint out the background and couldn't figure out how come it just wouldn't erase completely. Well, came to realize that I still had the opacity set at 20% for the last challenge..duh! Worked great at 100%! Now to figure out where to put the frame..and for that, I might have to choose another picture. So back to the drawing board.....

Ha ha, Terry, I've done that too -- forgotten to change the opacity!

OMG! I am using the same type of picture for my try. It's Bruce the shark from Nemo at Disney! Now I've got an idea as to how to place my frame...thanks!
