Default DGC056 - Masking 101 - 08/24/10

Hi Everyone,

Thank you for playing in the last digital challenge! It's so nice to see the interest in digital scrapping picking up. I love the pages you are all creating.

We've had a request for masking. Many of your stampers know about masking with rubber stamps, it's still kind of the same concept with masking in digital programs. Masking gives us opportunities to create really different looks, to be able to change part of the page, part of the photo, etc. There are many ways to use masking and this challenge is going to show you one of the ways. I hope you can use this information as a springboard to create some special layouts.

First of all, I must confess, I am no expert in the Stampin Up Program, MDS. If anyone is, please offer as much help as you'd like, we have many here who would like to learn. Secondly Photoshop Elements does not have a masking option like it's big brother Photoshop B U T there is a work around! Yea, yippee.

I have written a tutorial that I would like to share with you on masking. This is just a basic lesson and I hope you have lots of fun with it. To get the tutorial, please click HERE. If you have any questions, please let me know in this thread or you can PM me at MaggieMay.

Your Challenge is to:

Create a layout or card using the masking technique described in the above tutorial. Use it as a guide and be as creative as you like. Your page or card must have one element, photo, etc., that you use the technique.

We will go into other uses for masking as we progress in our challenges, so thanks for checking in. Let's get working on some pages!

Have a great time with this new challenge. I hope you learn some fun new things and have a creative and fun challenge. If you have any questions, please let me know or post in this thread. There are many talented members
here who can answer questions and give out more ideas.

So let's get ready to have fun, to share ideas and to inspire each other with out layouts!

To start the challenge off, here is my layout.

Maggie May

You can view all submissions for this challenge here: DGC056 Gallery

To add your page to this gallery, just add DGC056 to your keywords. Please also add SBC10AUG in the keywords. This makes it easier for us to search and find your layouts. Oh, and if you would, please take a minute to post a link on this thread so we wont miss seeing your work! Sometimes I have a hard time finding your layouts. If you want to send me a PM with a link to your layout, that would be great as well.

Have a great week! I look forward to seeing your layouts.

Oh, and one more thing -- don't forget to leave a little love for others when they leave love for you. Everyone likes to read comments about their work!![/FONT]-------------------------------------------
SBC's Information Thread: Everything you need to know to participate!

PLEASE NOTE:
A New Digi Challenge will be posted every other Tuesday. Have fun and check back again on September 7th for our next challenge.__________________

Cool technique. I always seem to open these so late at night that it's hard to concentrate to even read thru the instructions! I love the effect you ended up with on your layout though. I look forward to trying this out. If only I could find a way to do this while at work...

Default My page

Here's my first page for this challenge! I want to do another with a photo of my other DGD!

You Bring Joy

This was fun!!!!!

I used the marquee ellipse tool for this page. I also tried with the shape tool but couldn't get it to work. I'm going to try again on my second project because I'd like to use a different shape for that one.

Thanks, Laura!!

Did you make sure you clicked on the layer mask thumbnail before trying to soften the edges? (The thumbnail on the right in the adjustment layer you created.)

Candy, I was having the same problem in photoshop elements. I found I was only able to soften the edges if the foreground color was white, not black. Hope this helps,
Denise

Very neat layout! I tried to click on your DGC056 to bring up the rest of the gallery but you have semi colons in between words so it doesn't bring up the gallery...just thought I'd let you know.

Taca410, did you get it worked out? It's so nice that everyone pitches in to help. Please do not hesitate to ask questions, it helps us all learn. For me, the more questions, the better as I am always trying to make my tutorials easy to follow. This is a fun technique that you will use over and over again.

When you are working with a layer mask, remember the foreground color should be black to hide, white to reveal. There is an exception and that would be if you have a reverse mask on your layer (black instead of white) you will work with the brush tool. If you erase to much, just change your foreground color back to white to brush some of it back in. Hope this helps! Let me know what works and what doesn't?

Love both LO's already posted...Laura's and Wendy's! They are absolutely beautiful! Hope I can figure this masking thing out. Working in Photoshop Elements. Printing out tutorial now. I'm thinking that this technique might work well with my vintage pics.

I think it's perfect for the vintage look! It's not difficult; just make sure you follow the steps carefully. Looking forward to seeing your page(s)!

I am just now getting to this challenge. I wanted to make a shape frame using the shape tool, following the directions. But after I simplify the layer, the Modify is no longer available. It's grayed out.

Is there a step missing? Or that I'm missing?
Thanks,

OK...I'm trying to work thru this one. I've gotten to #7. What kind of adjustment layer do I click on? Levels, Hue, Brightness??? I tried the Hue mask. Where should that appear? Above the original photo or the copy? I made sure my foreground color was black and I clicked on the mask thumbnail to make it active but when I used the soft brush at 20% opacity...nothing happens on the picture nor does a black mark show up on the white thumbnail so now I'm confused...And I have to get DGS to bed so I'll be back in a while or try again in the am.

Scroll down a bit on the tutorial to where you see the blue writing. Those are for photoshop elements. I apologize, I should have mentioned, the blue writing is the changes for elements versus photoshop. It doesn't matter which adjustment you use, we are going to use it differently. There are some screen shots of elements of where the adjustment layer falls. See if you have that part and let me know, ok? I'm anxious to see you do this tutorial!

I always use the levels adjustment, mostly because I know it. It does need to be BELOW the photo. And the big part is to make sure it is "grouped" to your photo. The easiest way is to go to EDIT and then CREATE CLIPPING MASK. THis should make the little arrow appear on your layer showing it is clipped to your mask. (There is a shortcut to doing this by holding down the ALT key and hovering your mouse over the line between the two layers you want to group until you see the double circles.)

NOW make sure you are on the layer mask, using black as your foreground and you have a soft brush.

See if this helps.

There probably is a step missing there because of the translation from photoshop to elements. In order to make the modify available for use, simplify your shape layer and then hold the control button and click on the thumbnail of the shape layer (just on the thumbnail part), this will make a selection outline (marching ants) around your shape layer. Now the modify will show up and be available to use.

Please let me know if this works for you.

At least ONE from me! I can't believe there are really only two in the gallery for this challenge!! Can that be right? And it's yours and Wendy's! Both gorgeous I might add!

I'll try to finish it tomorrow, but I've a full day ahead! Hmmmm..... my addiction or my responsibilities.....

Yes, only two in the gallery so far. But I know it won't be long til there's more.

I am going to be posting the next challenge on Tuesday so we can get our every other week changed up one week - does that make sense. LOL So Tuesday I will putting another tutorial and challenge up about masking and "out of bounds" type look! You'll have lots of time to work on both of these then! Can't wait.
