This week's challenge is a little different. Usually I try to pick SU products out of the catalogue to find "ways to use". This week the challenge is to find ways to use and alter or personalize purchased journals, notepads, composition books. If you don't have any sitting around, check out the dollar store or Michael's, My 6x6 square journal is from Michael's and cost $1.50 CDN. I did find it a little tricky doing this project as I've never done anything like this before so let's all share our tips adn instructions to help each other out. I LOVED the great thread we had going last week. Thanks so much everyone for all your participation.
Sorry this post is a little later than usual. It is DD's 13th birthday today and was a little bit busier this morning. She wanted her presents before school today...imagine that!
Here is the link to the prayer journal I made yesterday for this challenge...
Please remember to put WT46 in your keywords section and post a link back here...I can't wait to see what you come up with! Good thing VSN is next weekend as this challenge will take a little longer than usual...next week I'll pick something a little simpler.
Hi Julia,
I just checked out your link and it is so BEAUTIFUL!!! One question: How do you put the designer paper on the cover so nicely especially with the coils. I have taken off the coils on a booklet and had the darnest time putting them back on nicely. I think I used the ribbon to cover up where they were all bent out of shape! Any hints???
Here's a link to my first one I ever did (I cheated on this challenge because I already did this one about 3 months ago) Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

This is perfect! I have been keeping a pregnancy/baby journal in a composition notebook that I keep meaning to cover. I will have to get working on this when I get home from the store!

My current prayer journal has a plastic soft-bound cover. Anyone have suggestions for covering that? Behind the cover (it's like the cloudy clear look) is pressed flower paper.

Great challenge!! I really needed a push to use all the little notebooks and things I buy and never get around to altering!! Can't wait to see what everyone does!!
Happy Birthday to your DD.... officially a teenager now!! How great!!

Can you scan us a pic...I'm not quite sure what you mean.
OMG!! I am so excited! I got a rockin notebook/journal from Shel9999 this week in the mail so I ran to Target to get some and I have a whole sack to do today, lol! AWESOME! This was already on my list!
I need to play in this one. If you don't want to do a big one, Walmart sells these little bitty ones (about 3" or 4" square) for $.94 each. (They are usually in the craft section on the end of a shelving unit.) Beate has a bunch of them in her gallery... (thanks, Beate) here's one: //www.splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=176427&cat=500&ppuser=458
I picked up a bunch of these, but haven't done even one. I guess I'm just a little intimidated by those coils & how to work around them. Looks like Beate just stamps up to the coils & then adds lots of ribbons.
They are really simple! I have been making them for a few weeks now for my hostesses. I also made one for my Mom's Group Leader at church. She put all the mom's names and phone numbers in her book (because they are so small, you can easily put them in a purse)....when we had a snowstorm, she was easily able to call everyone and reschedule the event.
BUMMER! I live in Germany, and they don't have Wal-marts or Targets or Michaels, so I asked my friend in the states to send some little journals to me...she did, but they got lost in the mail. Salt in my wound :(
Have fun ladies Can't wait to move back to the states!

Wow~never would have thought to do this! I have altered clipboards (lots of nieces were super happy this Christmas as well as DD) but will have to get into this, too! Love the little Wally's for a hostess gift, awesome!! Serving lunch today at school, hope I have time to run there and pick up a few. Great challenge!
I have this on my list to do this week too! I found some great address books on clearance for $0.25 at W-mart earlier this week. I do have 3 of the mini-notebooks in my gallery. I hope to have time to post my address books later.
What a great challenge! I actually started on my first compsition book for my neice's birthday last night. I'll try to finish it tonight and get it scanned.
;) easy peasy girls! cut your covers the size of your notebook, tear out a page of the paper and mark the holes or use it as a guide and punch each one....then snip the edge to the hole and fit your piece on pushing the little slits into place between each coil! voila!!!;)
here's one I did back in October Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

This is great timing! I bought a composition book over the weekend to try. I will have to work on it today after my dd comes home since she wanted to make one herself.

I just made one, but I can't post it...it is for my SS.
I opened it up and lined up the ends as best I could, around the coil, over the paper I was going to use to cover it....then used a pencil and marked each of the holes. Then I used my 1/8" punch to make the holes and used my craft knife to cut a slit to the outside of each one, then I slipped them onto the coil and used a touch of glue to keep the tabs stuck down...Clear as Mud??
I love doing these books, but.... a few years ago my husband made one for me that we've filled with cards and memorabilia of our life together. The problem is that the stuff we've put inside is filling the book so that the book won't close properly and about half the pages haven't been used!
Is there anyway I can remove spirals and put on new ones that are bigger so I can continue to use the book?!?
This was the perfect challenge for me! I bought 2 composition notebooks at Target on clearance after school started but I hadn't done anything to decorate them yet. I decided to do my sons first and I really like how it turned out. It's sweet, but not frilly. I think he will like it when he get older.
I did these last week for some friends. I have one more that I should do today...this is getting me kick-started!! I can't wait to see what everyone else comes up with!!
Wow, you have no idea how perfect this challenge is for me today! My daughter's school is having a basket raffle, and her 3rd grade class chose the theme "Smithie (our mascot) Pride" for their basket. Yesterday, the room mother sent home a paper saying nothing had yet been donated for the basket! Well, I've had these Michigan State papers, that also work for us here in our school district, and was intending to make some stuff for the basket but never got around to it. Luckily I'm at home today, and when I saw this challenge, I immediately ran and got the little notebook that I hadn't used yet, and made this up. Now I just need a few more ideas! Here's my notepad...
I've done the kind where you remove the coil totally and the kind where you can just bend each coil up and remove the cover. Both are really easy to do. After I remove the coil, I line up the cover with whatever I want to put on top and use my anywhere punch and punch the holes.
To remove the one-piece spirals, just unhook the top and bottom so the wire is straight, then just twist until it's all removed. I use a binder clip to keep the paper together so it doesn't fall everywhere when I'm removing the coil. Then when you're done, just line up the cover with the paper and twist the other way to put the spiral back in.

Here's mine! I want to do another, more original one, but time is tight today.... I had to use what I had out from yesterday. Hope to get to another this evening!
As usual, I'm at work right now, but here is one from my gallery that I did last year (I think): Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
It was a book from the Dollar Tree... this is good inspiration because the "box of stuff to stamp on" is getting very very full! Thanks! We'll see what I can do this weekend!
I never got mine made because I ran out of the designer paper I was using. I just bought some patterned CS last week that I want to use, so hopefully now I can get mine made. Thanks for the push Julia.

OK, that is the ONLY downside to DSS! Otherwise, I love being in the DSS!!! I have such a fear that mine is going to figure out who I am way too easily - guess it makes you stretch and work outside your box!

You can probably take it to a Kinko's or Staples or Office Max and have them re-bind it for you.
