Default TLC274 ~ That Old Black Magic ~ (05/24/10)

Hello Friends!

Well, did you all watch the series finale of LOST??? My boys are all LOST fans and they roll their eyes at me when I say that watching an episode of that show leaves me “LOST”. Five televisions in our house and THREE of them were tuned in for that last episode. I started to say something about them all getting together in one room to watch, but it’s much quieter when they stay apart!

~~ Black Magic ~~

The basic idea of the technique is stamp on dark (black used here) cardstock in white ink. Color your image with watercolor pencils. Decorate as desired.

I started noticing this technique awhile back when Karen Barber shared a few cards. Karen uses a white gel pen to highlight her images, which looks fantastic. I looked around the internet a bit and found this video tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XhztAqJ6OZc

Keep in mind, the video above has no sound, but it’s still easy to follow.

ETA: Neva (n5stamper) sent me this link to Wendy W's (Wendybell) tutorial on this technique... you might like this one, too!! :

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-s8kpSXbpUU

A couple of hints:
  • You can use different colored cardstock (darker colors work best) ~ does not HAVE to be black
  • If you stamp with a solid image, heat set, but do not emboss. The embossing powder breaks down with watercolor pencils.
  • If you use a line stamp, you can heat emboss. I’ve tried it with silver, gold and white.
Here is my sample:

~ Black Magic Birthday ~

Please remember when you upload to use KEYWORD TLC274 (no spaces)

For the entire TLC274 gallery, see HERE.

Now, go create!

This looks like fun! I'll have to pick up a couple things from the store so I can try it out. Oh and I feel the EXACT same way about LOST!! I used to watch it but eventually I just got so frustrated because there were too many questions and not enough answers!!

Well, I did two ATCs. I took turns hating them, so worked on two trying to get one that I liked. Now I think I like them both.

Great technique, on a very busy day it was a relief to have a technique that only took 15 minutes start to finish. I've been wanting to try this for a while and gave me the impetus to just do it. Here's my black magic violets.

Who knew if you forget to do "copy" before you paste, the computer pastes the last card you linked? Let's try to get you to the right technique - take 2, Black Magic Violets.

Holly, thanks for picking that technique. I would have never tried it without a challenge. I really didn't like the look until today. The other participants created some amazing samples.

Monday's I don't get to stamp until late, but I did get a card done!

This is a fun technique! I actually found that it worked better with Prismacolor pencils than watercolor pencils after trying both.

This was a new technique for me and I inadvertently did it slightly wrong. This is so typical me I read watercolour pencils so I used them wet! After reading the comments in this thread I realized they were supposed to be dry, but it got me thinking if the wet pencils worked why not twinkling H2O's. This technique is fun thanks Holly. Here is slightly more elegant Black Magic Rose

not only am I lazy (hence the spotlight for the technique), I am frustrated with the technique. I should have left well enough alone, the shimmer spray is too much, but I refuse to throw it all away. I can always send it to my grandmother who doesn't see so well, she won't see the splotches of shimmer and notice the lack of balance between the focal panel and the rest of the card. At least now I can say I have done black magic!

here is mine
