I'm just starting to undertake unmounting some of my rubber stamps & was curious what people did with all the wood blocks?
Glue different grits of sandpaper to some of them for sanding after embossing. Also, glue some felt to some for making daubers for ink or paint, especially the alcohol inks. You could also glue or just wrap some lace around the block to make a "stamp". I could go on and on, but I'm one of those who just can't throw away something until I know for sure that I will never use it (which is probably why I have so much "stuff".)

Why would you sand something that's been embossed?
If the paper has a white core, you get a nice effect with some color and some white on the design.
I have done this on SU cardstock which is not a white core. The raised part gets just a little lighter again for some contrast. Someone told me this technique was called faux suede.
If they are cleaned up, you could try selling them on ebay. There are a lot of stampers out there who buy unmounted stamps but want to mount them. Or, if that's too much trouble, just offer them on the SCS buy/sell/trade forum for the cost of shipping them. A school might like them to do craft projects with (like painting them and adding letters that they can use to form words). Or, if you have a fireplace, you can use them for kindling. Or give them to your kids for building blocks. But what a waste to just throw them in the trash.

What a great question! Oh, now I'm embarrassed to admit I just toss them. I may have to rethink what they could be used for in the future. Thanks for some great ideas.

That is cool I'll definitely be saving some for craft projects now--I think the kids'll love having carte blanche with them!
My reason for unmounting my wood stamps is to conserve space. So the best thing to do with the wood blocks is to get rid of them. I trash them without a second thought. I want the space they take up!
I wouldn't glue the felt on for using with alcohol inks. Instead, use some of the hook side of Velcro on the wooden block, and the disposable felt pads will adhere to that. I bought a yard of white felt and am still going strong with that and my homemade applicator for alcohol inks.
I also have heard that if you have used blocks that you want to trash try giving them to the High School or Middle School that may have a wood shop. They are always in need of blocks for the kids to practice on.
Also, someone mentioned a while ago when this came up, the unused ones give to a daycare, the larger ones, they can be painted with nontoxic paint and the kids can use them as building blocks.
I saw too someone made some alpha blocks and a train out of them as well on here.

These are beautiful!! How did you attach the pictures? My guess would be scan onto computer paper and adhere with ModPodge? I just unmounted a bunch of stamps and you have saved the blocks from the fireplace!

I use them in all sorts of ways...everything from toys for the kids to home dec. They make great 'wheel-less' cars or trains (hook together with small hooks and eyes placed on the ends of the blocks), building blocks, spelling games (letters cut with a die cut machine result in BIG Scrabble blocks), candle holders (a finishing nail in the center will secure the candle to the block), book ends, coasters, trivets, sanding blocks, felt covered 'painters,' etc. Here's a link to more ideas...
A while ago, somebody suggested donating them to a day care, and since we recently had a very large, very nice day care open in our little town and they were desparate for toys, I cleaned up a large number of blocks and took them to the day care.
I had hardly walked in the door and the older pre-school kids were checking out their new building blocks!
I saw the owner downtown a few weeks later and she said she used the larger ones, used her Cricut, and made alphabet blocks for the kids with modpodge! She asked if I had any more blocks!
I usually give them to my mother in law who I think passes them out to her stamp club. Many of those ladies buy bare rubber somewhere for really really cheap.. so she gives them to them so they can mount them. I have also given them away here on SCS for cost of shipping.
I don't mean to come across sounding like a smart aleck, but if you are that into recycling, you could attempt to return the wood blocks to the place where you purchased the stamps. They may not tell you, but I bet they would re-use them. Not something I would do though.
But, as you are trying to find somewhere to give/send the wood blocks, realize the time/expense/effort you are putting into it. Is that truly worth it just to recycle? Something to think about.
I have to admit, that I am not big into recycling, but I don't purchase stamps on wood anymore. Too much effort/time spent in unmounting.
I am excited to find out today that my Momma is sending me MORE blocks...they are in the mail as we speak and I should hopefully have them by this weekend...Maybe I can come up with something else to use them...but I really like the photo blocks and my teenagers are still messing with them!
When ya'll get yours done...I would love to see them...

Well, jeepers....those of you here who have unwanted blocks PLEASE don't just toss them! : ) Send me a PM!! ...I absolutely HATE double mounted stamps/sets, which I have a number of, as well as a few stamp/sets that I sort of cut up to create easier variations of stamping for myself. (Did that make any sense?) Happy to pay for shipping, etc.,..since I REALLY do need some extra blocks...
Anyone? Those are some CUTE ideas btw with the blocks! IF (doubt it) I ever went unmounted, it's nice to see some clever ideas on how to repurpose them.

I have unmounted a lot of my stamps and now I have a lot of the plastic cases.I don't know what to do with them besides using them to store some small stuffs.does anybody uses them for other projects?

Now that my stamps are stored on an open shelf and I can see exactly how much space they consume, I'm seriously considering beginning the unmounting process. Thanks for all the ideas for the wood blocks! I'm a big gift-giver so these are perfect!
I have just started unmounting a lot of mine last week. I just ordered the foam backing I needed to mount on them from E-bay. So far I have a small bucket full of unmounted blocks. I am giving them to the grand children to play with. They are having loads of fun with them.
I had to order some clear plastic cases from Stampin up to put my stamps in. Sure take up a whole lot less room.
I am not going to do anymore for awhile to make sure I like how they stamp. I played with a bunch of them and liked them so went ahead and unmounted a bunch.
For those of you that have unmounted your stamps what have you found to be the best for the new stamps to stick to the clear bocks. The foam for the most part has done a nice job. Others I had to paint a very thin coat of tack it over and over on the foam.
I love my stamps mounted on wood. If I don't have enough storage, I simply get rid of some stamps I don't use much anymore. I won't buy stamps unless I really, really like them and don't have anything even close. I would find having so many stamps that I must unmount them in order to have room means I have too many stamps and can't possibly use them enough to warrant the cost, and they simply become a collection that I can't even display. That being said, I do carve my own stamps and am lucky enough that my "unmounting" friends give me their blocks so I can use them for the ones I make. Some that come double mounted, or even more, on the cube style, I have also singly mounted on these blocks. I do have lots of the large background ones that I have been given that I will do the photo block idea with. Really love that with two adorable grandkids to spotlight!
After reading through all the ideas & searching Pinterest, I came up with a mini version for my desk of blocks for my college team. I just love them. They're small enough to set on my monitor stand. I've decided to make minis of other ideas I've seen.
