Stacy, I think that God doesn't care when you spend with him (morning, afternoon, evening). But I think that he does want something set aside each day, and not just when you can fit it in. I agree with Jules that it makes a dramatic difference in your day. You know I am a morning person, but even if I wasn't, I couldn't possibly tackle all I have on my plate right now, without first asking him what his plans are for me for that particular day, and me asking him to help me handle it! But I also agree with Debi about the guilt. God isn't about making us feel guilty, he is about making us more like him -- and I don't see guilt in God's attributes.
