Seriously, they're about 6" long and when you sand off the color, you're just sanding away just a bit of the surface.
Sizes - I've got probably 12 in everything from a 1 to a 5 and I use them all. It just depends on what I'm coloring. I would suggest getting an assortment (two if they're cheap) to play with. Once you get a feel for the sizes you use the most, you can add more in that size.
V
