CFC06 - The Lydia Project
I want to apologize for the posting of this for this month - I have been playing a bit of phone tag with the organization, to work out all the details! And now, I am *thrilled* to share with you this month's Cause! It will actually run through the end of March, to make up for the time lost this month!
The Lydia Project is all about spreading faith, hope, and love to women facing cancer. The Mission of The Lydia Project is to serve women facing cancer by providing hand-crafted tote bags, prayer and ongoing support.
I have spoken extensively with Michele, the program's director. What she aid would benefit the agency the most are notecards that they can send to the women in the program. Each woman gets a card a week for 12 month. Last week alone, they had 92 new requests to join the program. So you can imagine their need! As a special favor to this non profit organization, if you could put a stamp on the envelope to save them the cost of mailing it, or just send some sheets of stamps along with your cards, that would be wonderful!
To make it easy, this month I am going to try a list format to touch on the highlights of the cards that are being requested, to make it less confusing!
- uplifting, cheerful cards
- faith-based cards are welcome
- please leave cards blank inside - the organization will write the notes
- no lumpy embellishments - the goal is to be able to mail the card for whatever one stamp costs these days!
- all of the cards are for women, so make 'em as girlie as you want!
- sheets of forever stamps are welcomed and greatly appreciated by the Project
- please provide and envelope for your card
Please have your cards to me no later than April 3, 2009.
Send them to this address:
Splitcoaststampers Cards for a Cause
118 S. South Street #605
Farmville, Virginia 23901
USA
Upload your cards to whatever stamp gallery they belong in, and use the keyword CFC06. That way, we can all check the CFC06 gallery to see how many cards we are sending! Have fun, and thanks so much for helping us spread some sunshine! If you have any questions, feel free to post them here or send me a pm!
CFC06 Gallery is here.
Here is my first sample

Some thoughts and points Michele asked me to share with everyone:
*No woman should cope with cancer alone.
*The Lydia Project provides encouraging support to women coping with cancer of any kind and anywhere in the nation.
*Women are introduced to Lydia services by receipt of a handmade tote filled with encouraging info and personal items.
*Do you know a woman coping with cancer of any kind? Individuals can request a tote, prayer, or support for themselves or a loved one by calling toll free 877-593-4212 or online by visiting thelydiaproject.org .
*There is no charge for Lydia services
*Ongoing support includes encouraging cards mailed monthly for twelve months (longer if needed).
*For more information or to become more involved in The Lydia Project's outreach, visit the website at www.thelydiaproject.org. The Lydia team would love to hear from you.
*At The Lydia Project women coping with cancer are not alone.

Okay, here is my sample...not approved yet but hang on.
I think I need to add one more thing on the other cards..and will add it to this one...something on the ribbon in the corner like a prima or a jewel or something.
And, the thing that makes me laugh about this card is the Bible Verse says "Be Still and Know that I am God." and this card is anything BUT quite and still...sort of loud and obnoxious...but I think it's cheery! What do you think?? Too Loud?? should I change the verse??

Question about Cards for a Cause
Is there are certain number of cards that each person is to send? Can they all be the same or are you wanting different cards?
This is such a great idea and a simple way for others to help out someone in need.

Feel free to send whatever works for you. I'll take anything from 1 to 1,000,000!!!!!! They can all be the same if you want
This is about you creating what you want, to share love and compassion with women battling this disease!
I appreciate your help!

Thank you so much for setting this all up - it is appreciated. I definitely will be making some - and recruiting my daughter to help. She had Thyroid cancer last year - at the age of 14! Praise God it is the best cancer to get if you have to get a cancer.
We are so thankful for organizations such as this. Thank you for allowing us to help out.

This is such a good reason to make some cards. I have been a pediatric nurse specializing in caring for children with cancer for more than 16 years and have seen the need first hand. There are many support programs out there for children with cancer, but not so many for woman facing this dreaded disease. Add on all the daily stresses that women face and they can use every bit of support that we can give them. I am going to ask everyone at my stamp camp this weekend to help out so cards will be coming your way.
Thanks

What a great cause!!! Any stipulations on the cards as in, should we stay away from any particular cancer (ie, breast cancer??) and just keep them generic for all cancers and hopes and prayers...??
I think I'm going to make a mock up card and have my stampers at my next workshop participate in making these too! Very great cause....one that is near and dear to me!!!

I'm a survivor myself, so count me in!! And I can say from personal experience that a cheerful note can make a huge difference on a a bad day. And don't afraid to be funny... humor definitely helps!

I'm up for this as well. I have a very good friend going thru breast cancer & today was her final chemo treatment. And because of her peril with this ugly disease I had my first mammogram this year.
Great cause & great group.

I will work on some cards this weekend. My niece is currently undergoing treatment for Breast Cancer and her treatment is aggressive ... she is receiving Chemo every 2 weeks until April at which time she will undergo a complete mascetomy, followed by radiation and then possibly more Chemo. Several wonderful SCSers have sent her cards and she has been so moved by everyone's thoughtfulness and kindness. So I would definitely love to pay it forward!

I'm so terrifically tickled!!!! I got the Lydia Project to send a fellow teacher-and-friend one of their bags. Pat (patkritt) heard about the bag from our friend's caring bridge site and thus sent in her recommendation to you.
Thanks!!!!!
I hope you're doing well, Taylor.

After reading this thread, I checked out the Lydia Project website. Definitely something I'm interested in contributing to. I didn't see anything listed on any of the posts here or on the website about whether the donations of the cards are tax deductible, so I contacted the director of the project and she emailed me back. They are a 501c3 organization under IRS guidelines, which means that any donation you make to them can be claimed as a deduction on your tax return if you itemize. She requested that if you do send them some cards to include a note stating the value of the donation so they can send a receipt back for tax purposes.

I can't wait to share this info with my customers and hold an event this next month for this cause! And I love Teresa's idea for her customer challenge to have people bring already-made cards along - thanks for sharing that idea!
My hubby is undergoing treatments and I signed him up for Chemo Angels last fall - it's a blast getting cards from the Angels (from other parts of the country!).

Hi Julie,
I think it's OK for me to answer your questions...it's not required that you post your cards in the gallery (but we always like to check out each other's creations!)...just as long as you send them in to the Cards for a Cause mailing address before the deadline...hope that helps!

Do the materials/stamps have to be current or can they be anything that strikes our fancy? Would you like cards from Canada too? Do you know if there is an equivalent to The Lydia Project in Canada?
