Does anyone have a tried and true recipe for stamp cleaner. Seems like this is getting higher and higher in price and I run out when an order isn't due/or I forget to order through SU when do place my order.
I really like using Staz-on cleaner for rubber stamps - can get inks off of the rubber really good. But for a homemade cleaner, I've been using Simple Green...here is a link to the thread and has the recipe on one of the pages - you'll just have to scroll through: Forums at Splitcoaststampers

the correct ratio for simple green as a stamp cleaner is:
1/4 c simple green
1/2 c water....distilled water is best, as it will not have any impurities.
I was told to use just a bit of mild baby soap like Dove liquid baby soap in the white pump bottle and dilute with water. I have tried it a few times and seems to work ok, but I always use better cleaner for black and staz on. Also I just use a baby wipe for small stamps, leave it by your craft place and you can wash several with one wipe.
I asked the same question a few days ago, and someone shared this with me. I made some and it works absolutely wonderful. I found the glycerin at Walmart.
2 Tablespoons glycerin (in the Rx dept.)
8 oz. distilled water
1 teaspoon baby wash
I actually just made the one with the baby wash and glycerin and it worked out really well on a stamp that I use with staz on the other day. I used a cheapo stamp that I didn't have a whole lot of attachment to just to see how it would work with the staz on. I came off pretty well with minimal staining, almost none in fact.
SU ink pads may be easier to get ink off of stamps; however, waterproof archival ink, stazon etc are extremely hard to remove. Simply green
takes off some. I've started using a suggestion by soemone on this site at one time. Clear or white nail polish on the wood, to see if it will keep stazon ink from adhering.

Does anyone know if "Green Works" by Clorox might work instead of Simply Green? I have it here and would like to try it rather than going out to buy the SG. Green works is natural and stuff like SG. But not sure if the ingredients are exactly the same. Thoughts? Thanks!
My understanding was that the rosewater was just for the scent. I use the glycerin recipe and really like it. Works well, conditions the stamps and lasts forever.
I just use plain old liquid soap and water. Have been doing this for 12 years and haven't lost any rubber yet!

I'm with you !! I use soap and water and don't see the need to spend the money for something else except for StazOn... that's a MUST. I've bought stamps at yard sales that looked like they would never come clean but Stazon cleans them every time!

Glycerin is a common ingredient that serves to condition the rubber and keep it smooth and pliable, so that's probably one reason folks buy commercial stamp cleaners. I started making my own when SU! changed the scent of their Stampin' Mist several years ago, because the new formula really bothered me. Now I use a recipe that calls for 2 tbsp baby bath (I use unscented, sensitive skin formula -- figure if it's okay for a baby's delicate bum then it won't hurt my stamps!), 2 tbsp glycerin, and 8 oz DISTILLED water, and then I add my own scent from the soapmaking section at the craft store. After some searching I found one that smelled almost exactly like the Stampin' Mist used to! :mrgreen:

I guess I am getting confused by it all---but can someone clarify for me---can I just use Simple Green instead of Staz-on? And does it do the trick? Or is it straight Simple Green or a ratio to water? Also, do you put the Glycerin in for conditioning for your stamp? Sorry, I am a total newbie and this and not sure I am understanding this correctly. I just bought some Staz-on ink to use on an acetate card that turned out wonderfully but then realized I didn't have the right cleaner so had to go back for that. And eek--it was about $4 for one little bottle. Appreciate the help!

Dellabella .. I searched hi and low for simple green in Canada and finally found it at Cosco .. I got a spray bottle 22 oz ( 650 ml) and a refill 100 oz (2.96 litres) for 11.00 and I think it will be enough to last a lifetime
This recipe may be in one of the links already posted, but I made a batch and keep it in a gallon milk jug. It goes a LONG way and is said to be a copy cat of SU's cleaner.
2 cups distilled water
2 Tbsp. rose water (purchased at health store)
1 Tbsp. baby wash (I used a generic brand)
Rose water is a natural, non-alcoholic astringent. This works, looks and smells just like the mist that SU sells. Dilute the above combination 4 or 5:1 with water as it's too soapy otherwise.

I just wanted to let you know that I found Simple Green in Saskatoon at Canadian Tire. I bought the general cleaner as opposed to the specialty ones they have. I'm pretty sure I found it in/around the aisle where they keep general household cleaners. It should be easy to find.
I have to say, I have fallen in love with the stuff to clean everything!

It does work for Staz-on for me. Sometimes, it doesn't work as well as the Staz-on cleaner, but it does work. Sometimes there is still a hint of black left on the stamp but that doesn't bother me.
This is the recipe I use.
1 Cup Distilled water
2 tsp of Simple Green
1 tsp of Glycerin
I just cut the water in half to make the solution twice as strong. This works for me.

I just did a search on the Canadian tire website and it's says in stock at my local store!! Thanks so much for the idea!!!
So I just gotta ask because I have been going crazy looking for glycerin. Where are you buying this from? I looked at Target and safeway in the health isle, & the only thing I found was glycerin in capsule for (for constipation) I thought this would be found in a bottle like mineral oil is sold, maybe I am not looking in the right place.
Try asking at a drugstore, like Walgreens or similar, or ask at the pharmacy counter at Safeway or Target. It usually comes in a little bottle -- the one I have is about 4 or 6 ounces. It is a common ingredient in homemade cosmetics and soaps, so maybe a health-food store if you can't find it anywhere else.
