Premium Crease Pad tutorial by Patty Bennett

* You can use this pad when you want to create a more defined crease on the material being cut and scored. It's especially useful when you are cutting through materials other than card stock. It works great with dies that have a score line, and we recommend it if you use the Scallop Envelope, Pillow Box, Circle 3-D Ornament, Pointed 3-D Star, and Petal Card dies.

Scallop Die Comparison by Patty Bennett

SIZZIX DIE COMPATIBILITY

*All sizzix brand dies will work in the original Red Sizzix machine EXCEPT for the Bigz, Bigz XL, Decorative Strip, Any Die Marked "Roller Machine Only"

*All Sizzix Brand Dies will work in the Big Kick Machine

*All sizzix brand dies will work in the Cuttlebug HOWEVER your Cuttlebug opening MUST be at least 6 inches wide for the Bigz or Bigz XL to fit through the opening.
You can break your plates when using Steel Rule Dies such as the Bigz, Bigz XL dies in your cuttlebug.
These dies were made to be exclusive to the Big Kick and Big Shot Machine Only.
The Premium Crease Pad, Extended Cutting Pads are too WIDE to fit through the opening of the Cuttlebug machine.

*All sizzix brand dies will work in the Spellbinders Wizard

* Sizzix brand dies will not work in the Quickutz Revolution

I've posted a few pdf's and will update them as needed!

FYI In the .pdf for Sandwich Stacks it says Acrylic Mat (these are the Standard Cutting Pads that come with the Big Shot)
When using your Extended Spacer Platform make sure the Decal side is FACE UP!

I label my Cutting Plates CUT and EMBOSS so that when I'm using them I only cut on one pad at a time to get more milage out of them. It is normal for your pads to get marks on them when cutting. The pads are consumable and will eventually need replacing. Also "creaks" and "pops" are normal sounds as well and just let you know that the material is being cut.
* The Premium Crease pad is also a consumable item. You will get marks on it from use and eventually will have to replace it.

NEVER FORCE ANY SANDWICH THROUGH YOUR MACHINE. Every machine is a little different and will need fine tuning when using competitors dies such as the cuttlebug or nestabilities. Err on the THIN side when building your sandwich. You may need to use cardstock or thin chipboard "shim" to increase the pressure in some cases.

Ask away and ENJOY!

Hugs and Blessings

What is the premium crease pad used for?

You can use this pad when you want to create a more defined crease on the material being cut and scored. It's especially useful when you are cutting through materials other than card stock. It works great with dies that have a score line, and we recommend it if you use the Scallop Envelope, Pillow Box, Circle 3-D Ornament, Pointed 3-D Star, and Petal Card dies.

* This is a consumable item. It will get marked up from use and will eventually need to be replaced.

PREMIUM & EXTENDED PREMIUM CREASE PADS

We recommend the Premium Crease Pads and Extended Premium Crease Pads when using rule-based dies with score lines. The crease pads provide a flexible cutting surface that produces clean cuts and well-defined score lines. When using the crease pads, you should layer your sandwich to pass through the Big Shot in the following way (starting from the bottom):

Standard or Extended Cutting Pad
Shim (optional)
Die, blade up
Material to be cut
Premium or Extended Premium Crease Pad*

Shims are used to add thickness to the sandwich passing through the Big Shot machine, applying more pressure to the die and resulting in deeper score lines and embossed images. Plastic shims are included with each crease pad, but you can also use text-weight paper or card stock as a shim.

The necessity of shims will vary among users. Due to the tolerable variances in the measurements of all products associated with cutting, results can slightly differ depending on the material being cut, the die being used, or even from one Big Shot machine to another. You should experiment to identify what works best (shim, no shim, extra shim, etc.) for the material you are cutting and the die you are using.

*Use the Premium Crease Pad with Originals or Bigz dies. Use the Extended Premium Crease Pad with Bigz XL dies.

Will the SU Classy Brass work in the Big Shot?

YES

Here's the sandwich stack from bottom to Top

Multipurpose Platform Tab 1
Standard Cutting Pad
Metal Stencil
Cardstock
Silicone Rubber
Impressions Pad*
Roll through Big Shot

* Tip if you don't want the edge of the stencil to be embossed cut your silicone mat smaller than the shape of the metal stencil. Spellbinders Tan Mats are also wonderful to use for this technique. If you want to be like MacGuyver Plumbers Gasket or just a rubber sheet would work also. Just remember you may have to experiment to find the right "fit" for your machine.

Silicone Rubber and Impressions Pad are part of the Texturz Starter Pack. You can also buy them separately.

Hugs and Blessings
Alicia

I mark my Standard Cutting Pads (i.e. Acrylic Mats) Cut and Emboss so that I only cut on one at a time. This will help me get more miliage out of my pads until I have to replace them.

So I will only use the CUT pad when I am cutting until it needs replacing then I will start using the Emboss Pad and so forth.

Make sense?

I have not tried it yet so I cannot give you a firm answer. I just purchased the tan embossing mats to use when embossing with my nesties. Is the rubber the same as the silicone rubber that comes with the Texturz kit? I could try that and see if it will work!

The Big Kick is the same design as the Big Shot and comes in Red and White. It can be found at Michael's, JoAnn's and other Retail Chain Stores.

Big Kick and Big Shot are both made by Sizzix. Both have the multipurpose platform and use the same sandwich stacks.

What is the Price of the Tote for the Big Shot?

The Doctor's Bag is $69.99 and has the SU logo on it. It can be purchased from your SU Demonstrator.

The Sizzix Doctors Bag is the same except it has a Sizzix Logo also $69.99 also found in retail chain stores.

I want to add that I haven't needed the crease pad with the Top Note, Scallop Envelope, or Pillow Box dies. If you are cutting vellum (or something similarly thin), try putting a sheet of cs in with it--that will make sure you get the stronger score marks. :-)

Default Crease Pad Comment

FYI: I found that when I use a die that requires a crease pad and am cutting through multiple layers of cardstock that if I don't use the crease pad that I get slits were creases should be.

Does anyone know how long the cutting blades on the dies stay sharp and true?
Sorry if this has been asked before.

I was given the Big Kick. Can I use and how can I use my Fiskar texture plates(I believe that's the right name)? I also have some metal embossing plates. Can these be used too? This has maybe been answered somewhere else, but I couldn't find it. I have learned so much from this site. THANKS

See the 1st post for the .pdf file with mulitple sandwich stacks

The Big Shot and Big kick are very similar in design.

Anyone know if the Fiskars Plates are like the Texturz Plate? If so then that is the sandwich you would use from bottom to top:

Multipurpose Platform Tab 1
Fiskars Plate
Cardstock
Silicone Rubber
Impressions Pad
Roll through Big Shot

You can emboss with metal stencils in the Big Shot and Big Kick. There is a sanwich stack also listed bottom to top:

Multipurpose Platform Tab 1
Standard Cutting Pad
Metal Stencil
Cardstock
Silicone Rubber
Impressions Pad
Roll through Big Shot

Thanks Alicia, I will give it a try. I appreciate all the info. I see you are a USMC spouse. I have a nephew who just left the Marines, a nephew in his third tour of duty with the Army in Afghanistan, another nephew aboard a navy ship in the Middle East, my husband is a Vietnam veteran. Go USA!

I love the Top Note Bigz Die -- will it fit in the Cuttlebug? I've read through so many posts now I'm confused. And what size is it when it's cut out -- does it fit on an A2 card?

Thank you,

I'd be interested to know the answer to this too. While the die itself might fit, I'm curious about whether it will fit when all the cutting plates are in place.

I tried chipboard and was very disappointed that it didn't cut all the way through. Is there a secret?

Which type of die did you use? The Bigz and Originals will cut chipboard, but any of the Sizzlit type dies will not. Their blades are not deep enough.

Wanted to pass along because I found it really helpful. Someone, sorry, I can't remember, posted that they unscrewed their Multipurpose Platform. I did this sometime ago, (I have the Teal Big Shot and yes, the new SU one) and found it soooo much easier to roll the sandwhich through without the other parts hanging over.

Also, along with SU's classy brass templates, Lasting Impressions and anyother emboss templates work.....

just me,
Faith

Types of Dies and what they do by Jane in San Diego

Steel Rule Dies (i.e Sizzix Originals, Bigz, Thick Cuts, Cross-Cuts, Accucut retired wood mounted dies for ZEM, etc. All are the same height, but
they are different in width and length.)

* oldest style of die
* can cut through the widest variety of materials
* designs not very detailed

Low Profile (i.e. Sizzlet, Sizzlet border dies and ThinCuts, Cuttlebug*)

* second oldest style of die
* Limited to what type of materials you can cut
* Cuttlebug dies are etched not ruled & can cut thicker materials than the Sizzlet Dies
* Some detailed designs available

Wafer Thin (i.e. Spellbinders, Quickutz, Bosskutz, SAR, ZEM)

* newest style of die
* can cut thin chipboard and pulpboard
* can come with or without a release liner
* Most detailed designs available
