TLC192 Paper Napkin Transfer

Today's technique will show you another way to make your own background papers from some of those left over napkins we all seem to have. I'm referring to the decorative themed napkins left over from birthday parties, Halloween parties, Thanksgiving dinner, and of course Christmas. All you will need for the basis of this technique are:

Decorative Napkin
Freezer Paper (the white stuff with a waxy coating on the backside)
Iron
A piece of scratch or copy paper
Other cardstock and supplies you would like to complete your project.

1. First start by unfolding your napkin and if it is a multi-ply napkin, carefully pull the layers apart so that you only have the top decorative layer for your project.
2. Cut a piece of freezer paper a little larger than your napkin (about 1/2 to 3/4")
3. Heat your iron while you first lay your freezer paper, shiny side up, on your ironing board. Next, lay your decorative napkin (pretty side up) onto your freezer paper, then lay your copy paper on top of your napkin.
4. Heat with your iron (set on medium - no steam) for about 15 to 30 seconds, moving your iron over the copy paper, applying gentle pressure until your napkin is adhered to your freezer paper.
5. Now just apply your pretty napkin to your cardstock, (just like you would if you were using patterned paper) and complete your project as desired.

This is not only a way to create some beautiful background paper, but a fun and creative way to use up those left over napkins that are just too pretty to toss away. I can't wait to see all the fun creations from this technique.

Hi. I've done cards with napkins before but used spray glue outside (spraying the cardstock and laying the napkin onto it carefully, watching for wrinkles) to get the napkin layer on to cardstock. I don't have any freezer paper but I can pick some up today at work and give it a try (along with some napkins, I realized I don't have any decorative napkins, either).

I don't know about this one. I avoid my iron at all costs, but if there is anything that will get me to plug it in it will be this challenge. We'll see. Papercrafting is the only time I bring out the sewing machine, so it's possible.

I'd totally forgotten you mentioned paper napkins last week. We simply don't have that sort of freezer paper over here, I'll have a go with baking parchment and see how that goes. And if that fails, I'll follow that spray-mount suggestion though I can just see the wrinkles now, LOL.

I did try this, but could never get the plastic wrap to adhere to my napkin. Perhaps it was the type of plastic wrap I was using (suran wrap).

I've never tried it with wax paper. You could give it a try, but I'm not sure that wax paper has the same properties as the freezer paper. Let me know if it works. :-D

Great challenge, Lynn. However, I've no freezer paper, parchment paper OR plastic wrap - lazy household - LOL! Anyways, can't wait to see what everyone comes up with!

Freezer paper can be found at any grocery store. It's with the tin foil and plastic wrap. I find that I use freezer paper a lot for crafting, and not just for this technique. It makes a great non-stick surface when working with glue and mixing colors together for other projects.

It probably was the type of plastic wrap - they all are a little different... We used to use dry cleaner bags 'back in the day' for fabric applique - they would probably work for this, too!

No pretty napkins here. I don't think plain white would work too well as a background, but thank you Lynn for the challenge. I have also heard of using wonder under on these hot cards.

Thanks for the alternate (plastic wrap) method. Don't have any plastic wrap and don't intend to buy any. I knew there was a reason I hung onto my old iron. I'll try this.

Lynn, I know you said save your paper napkins last week. I had none then, I have none now. Grocery stores don't carry freezer paper here. I live in a cave, apparently.

HOWEVER, I can hardly wait to see what everyone else who doesn't live in a cave comes up with. It looks like an amazing technique!!!!!!!

Very interesting technique! I found plenty of pretty napkins, but no freezer paper. I just tried wax paper, parchment paper and the cling wrap method and none of the three alternatives worked for me. If I can pick up some freezer paper this week, I'll give this a try later on. Thanks, Lynn!

What is copy paper? Is that just plain typing paper?

For those that don't have the freezer paper or food wrap here is an alternative method. I have used napkins on cards before using acetate and a glue stick.

Pull your napkin layers apart and use the top decorated layer.
Cut out your image roughly.
Apply glue stick glue to a piece of acetate big enough for your image.
Smooth the napkin image onto your acetate and leave it to dry.
Glue the acetate piece to a piece of CS (I use the glue stick again), leave to dry and then trim the image finely. Add to your card as desired.
