What is the best cardstock for cardmaking? I have some of the DCWV cardmaking cardstock, but not impressed with it because of the white core when I score it. I figure I can use it for other parts of my cardmaking instead.

I've also found DCWV cardstock to be extremely floppy and not ideal to be the base layer on my cards or scrapbook pages as a result. Don't know why they keep making such pretty cardmaking kits and selling beautiful variety packs of card bases with this flimsy material.
I use 110# white cardstock by Domtar for most of my card bases; picked it up at Staples. I also like Bazzill and SU cs, and would be using Papertrey, Prism, and Neenah cardstocks, as well as the heavier watercolour papers and Fabriano Medioevalis cards if finances allowed me to buy even more paper than I currently have.
I use SU, I did get some PTI but I don't think it's packaged well when it's mailed and if it arrives with the corners crumpled, which happens, their response is they can't do anything about it, it's the fault of the shipper. With 8 1/2 x 11 there's just no room for a crumpled corner since each sheet makes 2 cards.
Bazzill is very nice too, I don't think it's as heavy as SU but it's textured and the SU card stock is a similar weight so I think it's just textured papers in general that aren't as heavy. Bazzill is good if you want a bunch of the same color since SU doesn't have textured in single color packs. Bazzill also has a million colors

DCWV prefolded cards ARE somewhat flimsy
However their cardstock isn't - now that I use a scorpal I'm not getting the white core showing through issue.
I've been looking at I believe Neenah Cryogen white and Poison Ivy - I have seen loads of good reports on it on this site by some well known crafters AND you seem to be able to buy packages off it quite reasonably.
I love my Bazzill! I love the huge variety of colors, the different textures, and it's plenty heavy for a cardbase since my cards tend to have at least 3 layers of cardstock by the time I'm done.

One of my friends ordered some of the new vanilla cardstock and it came with one very dinged corner. She said it looked like it had been that way before it was put in the package because the shrink wrap was torn on the corner...not the sort of damage you get inside a box. She called PTI and was told it was the way that UPS handled the package and that they wouldn't replace it for her.
I really like PTI cardstock...but I stopped buying it because of the dinged corners I got on the last batch I ordered. Too bad...I really like the weight and the colors. If I order cardstock from SU! and it comes damaged, it gets replaced.
I've tried a lot of others. But so far I like SU's cardstock. I haven't try papertrey. I guess because I like SU so much I figure I just stick with them. Also, I figure, I put so much time in making a card, I want to use "nice" cardstock and not the flimsy one that one might think it was "cheap" and poor effort on my part. Use good CS when you care to send the very best. :-)
DEFINATELY Stampin' UP! cardstock!! White, Vanilla, colored (I dont like a white core, if I want contrast Ill ink them with white!)
I agree with JanTink and Myhappyplace- if even an 1/8th of the edge is bent, SU! will replace it, no problem.
Why hassle with a company that wont help you. I cant use bent CS, and shouldnt have to 'cut around it' or only use half.
For card bases, I love PTI's white and cream. I'm an SU demo, so naturally I use SU cardstock for things that are exclusively SU, but for my personal use, I like the sturdiness of the CS from PTI.
I love SU in all colors of cardstock other than white. I ordered a pkg of the whipser white and I had no idea that it was so luch lighter then the other colors. Did I just order the wrong stuff or is all the white cs flimsier (sp?) than the other colors?

I use SU all the way. I have never used Papertrey but I hear that is really great too.

I don't know, and I hope I don't get flamed for saying this but I don't think you will get a non-biaised opinion on an SU product here as there are so many SU demos who make their pennies selling the product. Bit like asking a Toyota Salesman if his product is better than Honda's.
Another sturdy CARDSTOCK I have found is American Crafts though it was textured and I didn't purchase any at this time.
I like Papertrey the best for their white cardstock. SU and Papertrey for colored. SU's white is way too flimsy for card bases. Sometimes you can remedy a bent corner with a corner rounder, although I haven't ever had a problem with receiving PTI cardstock with bent corners.

Well, maybe I'm not picky enough, but I got a dinged batch of white from PTI (one out of about 6 paper orders I've had with them) and just made sure the dinged corner was on the back of the card or cut off of the layers when I didn't use it as a base. I doubt very seriously anyone who gets my cards would notice, or if they did, would think a thing about it! As long as the front looks nice, I'm happy.
The quality of PTI cs is so wonderful, and I love its "tooth" for stamping so much that SU's slick whisper white and vanilla just annoy me now.
All the other colors of SU totally and completely rock, however! That reminds me, think I need to place an order....:rolleyes:

SU makes the vanilla and white lighter weight for layering. If you look at the samples in the catalog, not one is a white base card. (A few may look like it but they are confetti or white natural..whatever they call it...not whisper white.) Their style is to use colored card bases. Since I often use white bases, I use PTI Stampers Select white. But all my colored cs is SU.
If you haven't tried it, I *highly* recommend Prism. Beautiful colors and a subtle orange peel texture. Great to stamp on and looks more sophisticated than flat cardstock.

Wow! Nice to know that apparently my opinion can't be non-biased. I, like most demos, didn't become a demo because it was a big business decision. I became a demo, because I had stamped used other product (for three years), but once I was introduced to SU there was no going back. I loved their product so much that I realized I could make their min. sales myself. Over time, I started selling SU to others, because I loved the products and I love teaching. It seemed wrong not to share such a fabulous product with others. I don't know a single demo that didn't become a demo, because first and foremost she fell in love with our product over the others she had tried. We were all customers first, and our opinions have just as much value as others.

Wow - hit a nerve obviously. I did not devalue any persons opinion, I just reminded the reader to consider the source.
I prefer to hear opinions from people that continue to test all areas of supplies and aren't bound either psychologically or monetarily to a single company - it's called freedom of choice. I wasn't slamming SU or SU demos but only pointing out to the original poster that this forum is heavily SU oriented, just as a CK board will be CK oriented, a QK board etc. As there isn't an overt message from SCS to newbies that this board is heavily SU influenced it just puts perspective to someone asking for advice that there is an inbuilt bias because of the strong historical association.
I really like Papertrey. It's really thick and holds up to lots of layers. I do use SU, and have found their Very Vanilla to feel slightly heavier than their other cardstocks (I know it's probably exactly the same, but for some reason it feels thicker to me!)

Well, I beg to differ with your idea of demos not offering unbiased opinions. :mrgreen:
I'll answer the question: YES, the Whisper White is lighter in feel than the regular cardstock, but it is not intended for card bases, but for stamping images. If you asked your demo what the weight was, she would be able to tell you that both the colored cardstock and the Whisper White are 80 lb. weight. So why does one feel so much lighter than the other?
The weight measurement of cardstock tells you how much 500 sheets of paper weighs, so you'd THINK that heavier measurements would mean thicker cardstock. But when you are discussing weight in regards to paper, papers cut to 8 1/2" x 11" having the same weight do not all necessarily weigh the same:

First of all, 500 sheets of 80# cover stock do actually weigh 80#, just as 500 sheets of 80# text stock weigh 80#. The trick is that the 8.5" x 11" cover stock noted above was cut down from a 20" x 26" "basic size" sheet of cover stock. The basis weight of 500 sheets of cover stock at the basic size is 80#. Text stock is cut from a larger sheet (25" x 38"). Therefore, 500 sheets of text stock at the basic size also weigh 80#.
PapertreyInk says their cardstock is 110 lb. weight...but a lot depends on what the basic size of the sheet was before it was cut. To me, the white is much heavier than SU!'s regular colored cardstock and definitely heavier than Whisper White. But PTI's colored cardstock does not feel as heavy as their white and is only slightly thicker than SU!'s colored cardstock. So the sheet size on the colored cardstock must be larger than the white is. But they are still both graded at 110 lb. weight. It seems like it is deceptive advertising, but it is not...it is simply the standard industry method of grading paper.
Personally, I really love Whisper White and prefer it MOST of the time when stamping images. The smoothness really gives me a beautiful image, both in solid and detailed stamps. I do own some Papertrey Ink white and use it for the occasional card base and occasionally when I want something with a bit more tooth to it....like when I'm coloring in with Prismacolors and I don't plan on blending them with Gamsol much. It also holds up a bit better for watercoloring...but then, I find Whisper White is fine as long as you don't use a ton of water and don't overwork the image.
I also like that Whisper White does not add as much heft to my cards...I use lots of layers and my cards would be too heavy if I were using PTI on every layer.
Also wanted to add: Whisper White is a coated cardstock and the coating adds to the weight...so a coated cardstock, even with the same basic sheet size as a non-coated cardstock of the same composition will weigh more. But when comparing two cardstocks with the same basic sheet size and industry weight, the coated will appear to be lighter, because part of the weight of the sheet is the coating.
I use the GP white 110# and Strathmore Vellum smooth 140# from art supply stores or from Michaels when they go on sale for my card bases. I don't llike SU white for bases it's too flimsy but great for imaging and layering
I use SU and CTMH colored cardstock, but I also use Carnival brand from www.marcopaper.com. The (Carnival) has a really gorgeous red, a rich yellow, etc. I've also used ColorBlock. Good weight & lovely colors.
As for my card bases I really prefer Marco Paper's Cougar 80# White or Natural. Very smooth and pretty.
I found that when I ordered a cardstock sampler from Marco Papers, I was able to feel, weigh & generally choose exactly what I wanted. They have hundreds, if not thousands, of types to choose from.
I just like a lot of choices so I use anything that looks beautiful, has some heft to it and makes me smile.

Stampin' Up all the way!!!! I have all the CTMH colors as well, but I mainly use those for layering. It is too flimsy for the actual card base. I have get to Hollos in Ohio a few times a year and have a box full of paper from there. Again, too flimsy for actual card bases, but great for layering, etc. At $1.00 per pound of paper you can't beat it!!!
Another vote for SU! I love their cardstock, but even more I love that there are markers, ink pads, ribbon and other accessories to match. I'm a demo too, but this is my unbiased opinion .
