Question Invitation wording help

I need help with the wording on a first birthday party invitation for a friend's little boy who's turning one. She wants to request that people don't bring presents (she's inviting around 60 and doesn't want that much stuff!).
I was thinking of writing at the bottom:
 "we request a donation for the March of Dimes for Josh's gifts"
or
 "your presense is requested more than presents"
Has anyone done this or any suggestions?
thanks!

I think either of those are great............especially the donation to March of Dimes or even Ronald McDonald House is great - or Toys for Tots - even though it is early for that - they will still accept the items - you would just need to call your local recruiting office and set it up............. Even putting "no gifts please"
is acceptable.

Perhaps she could say, "In lieu of gifts, please consider making a donation to the March of Dimes". If you say please it doesn't sound bossy.

Or maybe a poem...

Our little guy is turning one!
We've planned a day of so much fun.
We're glad that you can come and play,
But let's not forget those who don't have such happy days.
Instead of gifts we'd love to donate lots
To that great charity, Toys for Tots.

Please, instead of a gift for Josh, bring a new, unwrapped toy to be donated to Toys for Tots. Thank you!

(I just came up with the poem off the top of my head, so if someone can improve upon it, please feel free!!)

I would just put a small notation on the bottom of the invitation saying.....No Gifts Please!

If people ask or make a fuss about that, then tell them they can make a donation in the family's name to an organization of their choice if they would like.

The important issue is for the people to attend the party to celebrate the child's birthday. No matter what the invitation says, most everyone will bring a gift anyway, especially since it's a First Birthday.

My dd asked people to give a donation to the Susan G Komen fund for her 16th and we worded it like this on the invite:

Your presence is a present
but if you wish to do more
a donation to the
Susan G Komen Foundation
is the best gift for sure.

I got it from the grapevine that there is a new stamping magazine coming out called "Just Invitations!" I haven't seen it yet on my store shelves yet, but keep looking! It's bound to be out soon! ;)

One of my friends did a huge party for her son's first. She didn't want gifts either and this is what she did:

"No gifts please. Instead, please bring a new or slightly used book so all the children can enjoy a book exchange." It worked well and all the kids loved the "free" book.
